Screen or no Screen on a XTX!!!!!

I'm planning a little touring trip ( about 10 days ) through France this Easter, and was wondering whether a screen would make any difference on my XTX.

I've had screens on other bikes and they sometimes make wind and noise worst, so before I waste 80 was wondering whether anyone had some advice on screens.........Cheers

If you are running with the standard small screen then get the touring screen, it really makes a huge difference. No blast on your chest and you can cruise at a higher speed more comfortably. This is my bike.

Wow!!!! That looks good..........Where did you get that from mate

Screens are a bit of a personal thing, one type doesn't suit everyone. Depends how tall you are, where you sit, what helmet you have, how fast you ride etc. I'd experiment first with whatever you can find (like card) taped/cable tied to the bike to see what your going to need (or borrow someone else's screen!) I've used old estate agent's for sale signs to cut up and experiment with in the past - which worked a treat!

It came with the bike but it is a yamaha touring screen. Go to yamahas site and you can get the part number or check out ebay

Yeah thats a point........Ive often ridden friends bikes and got a completely different feel and sound coming from the screen.

I bought a screen and its made a huge difference. I was surprised how much really. 70mph was comfortable pre screen now 90 is the same. I don't think they look great but well worth it. I got mine mail order from Hein Gericke at Peterborough, roughly 45 delivered.

Hi I am also after a new screen (after testing mine out for strength against the road, it lost!).
I am really stuggling to find anything on the net though, I dont want a touring size screen as i only commute a few miles to work. and was more looking for cosmetic /ascetic improvements.

Any suggestions / links much appreciated :signthankspin:

or suppose i will just have to go with the Yam standard one.

Thanks Tony, & Javahouse much appreciated. I was surprised at how little after market screens are available for XT's.

I have just followed a link regarding cush drives, and found this screen also
http://www.off-the-road.de/XT-660/Bo...ld-XT-660.html

which may well be the Puig screen (looks very similar, if not identical), but manufacturer is not listed.

I think you guys are forgetting an XTX is a Supermoto :)

Stop riding so far on them :)

That is a Puig screen.

If you have a 2007 XTX or newer you have even less choice. TBH the 2004-2007 has loads of options, pick one to suit your riding.

Cheers guys.........Thats really great info and given me lots to think about :occasion14:

I had the yamaha original screen, then the tall screen.
It (tall screen) makes the bike look ugly, like a flat fish:
http://thefoodieshandbook.co.uk/images/Brill.jpg
But that's only how i feel :) Some people still like it.
And since im 190cm, it still doesn't help with the wind. In fact, it got worse, since all the wind is diverted straight to the helmet, so very much turbulence there.

Then I got a screen from OTR (since i did not have the original screen anymore): http://album.piipz.com/displayimage.php?album=11&pos=7

So the thing is, for tall and really tall people is actually better to use no screen at all :P The bike doesn't go much over 150km/h so there's not much difference. Straight wind onto helmet or chest is better than buffeting wind that is caused by a windscreen.

Of course, things are different, if you are shorter or you can handle a screen that tall, that the wind blows over your head.

chester0_1972 15-03-11 19:55

I'm 6'7 and the screen makes a hugh difference. Don't get buffeting.

i'd agree that the large screen fitted to my bike is pig ugly but I also benefit from its protection. For me the function of the screen outweights its beauty on this occasion. I am 6ft exactly or 183cm in height and I get zero buffetting, no chest wind blast so it must be ideal for me.

Worth considering as the comments are all valid.

If all else fails, drive a car, no wind blast!!! (Joke BTW!)

StevieB 05-04-11 22:00

I got mine from Skidmarx - Tall screen for about 45 - make sure you order a smoked one - the clear screen looks naff! However screen looked good but turbulence hitting helmet directly - much more noise and buffeting to the extent of not being able to ride with helmet visor up - so I cut the screen with a fret-saw to make it about 4-5 inches lower than the original - looks like a fly screen and no more turbulence -Cheers, StevieB

jusu 02-07-11 23:14

Which screen worked for me

Hello,

I'm really sensitive about any turbulence in my helmet, I just cannot stand it, so all of the touring screens are pretty much out for me. I bought the Yamaha smoked small screen, but it already was too high and the turbulence got me in the helmet. Additionally my 3rd party hand guards (aluminium frame ones) were in the way.

Solution, I cut out about an inch off from both side "flaps" and less than an inch from the top of the screen, making the screens top straight, not curved. This works like a charm for me. No turbulence and highway speeds are way, way nicer to drive. Only downside is the price of the screen, 70 for a piece of plastic is quite a lot. I made the screen so much smaller, that I did not have to use the extra braces it came with.

I know this is an old thread but is there any updates regarding the screens for the newer models? Has anyone else fitted one since this thread was posted?

I've started using the bike for travelling to work and the wind in the chest can be a bit of a pain at times. It's not too bad during daylight hours but at 3 or 4 in the morning it can get a bit chilly.

I have PUIG screen,

mrfijjitt 12-04-12 22:09

Hi,
I have an MRA screen, it has helped loads.
I purchased the bike with the thought of touring, abit.
I was finding it hard work doing any big roads. the wind made me hold on tight.
It is possible to adjust the height and angle which I like and after abit of playing I found a nice spot. It definatly doesn't totally shield me, if I angle it up abit I get helmet jiggle, ouch.
I had to spray the front bit and remove the standard 'shield'

http://i1028.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1010286.jpg

http://i1028.photobucket.com/albums/...t/P1010225.jpg

It's not perfect, I had to fill a gap with some foam to stop air coming under.

Grim Reaper 12-04-12 22:29

Thanks for the quick replies. I have been considering the Puig screen as there doesn't appear to be much on the market. Would you say that it was worth the money?

With the MRA screen, can it be used with the original headlight surround or does it have to be removed?

mrfijjitt 13-04-12 16:56

Depends what colour your bike is I reckon.
Mine being white it looked pants, like it was an add-on. It clashed with the big red sticker too.
But I think if the bike was black it would've looked better with the original surround.
