Drowned bike
 

Hi ,yesterday i went into a pool of water that turned out to be petrol tank high and the bike stopped ,any advice would be good . http://www.xt660.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://www.xt660.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

If you have to ask this, then you need to give your bike to a mechanic.....

Open the air box up & remove all signs of water, clean or replace the air filter, renew the engine oil & filter, remove the spark plug & crank the bike over removing all water from the motor. All this work must be done as soon a possible so there is no damage to the motor.

Unplug all electrical connectors & clean & spray with WD or similar.

thats what i was thinking ,have not tried starting in fear of bendin a rod .just needed some reassurance .Many thanks

Don't forget the exhaust if it was that deep.

depends how bad the oil is contaminated, but engine flushing oil for starters with the bike on tick over for as long as you dare then an oil change till the waters gone.

If you do drown a bike get the air box and exhaust emptied, plug out and tow push the bike in gear to get the water out.

If the engine was running when it submerged that's when, if any bending would have occured. Cranking it over would just lock it if the cylinder was full of water.

I wish you luck it might only need drying out and a precautionary oil change, and don't forget to check the fuel tank for water ingress.

Ive heard this does take a while to do, speaking to a guy we did some off raoding with in wales, loaned a bike to a supposed expert!!! went flying into some water and full throttle into the water. Took the guy 2 days to strip the think and replace the dent rod, which in his words was more like an S then a straight line.

I remember near dropping my bike in the water like that, but near burst a blood vessel to ensure it wasnt going under:pjrlaugh_61OD3G:

But at least the water here was relatively clean!

btw. this is not me, but my friend Julie...

As others have said, get the water out of every nook and cranny as soon as possible - we emptied this bike out on the side of the trail, and got it running again with no problems... Julie then changed the oil when she got home (it was to colour of chocolate milkshake), and changed it four or five more times (including the oil filter) until the oil was clear again... then went on to ride the bike about 15,000 more miles with no problems!

I'll never understand this water in the engine business. I thought that a submersed engine means fun time is over, but a mate of mine dropped his Varedero just like JMo's buddy up there, with engine still running. After we got it out he turned it over and after a few chugs it came to life with a rumble, water and smoke straight out of the exhaust. Sounded rough at first but went back to normal soon after. That happened about three years ago & he's had no problems since??
