Sliding calipers. Presume one of them was off in the direction the caliper is able to slide to compensate for pad wear, the other was off in the other direction, and the caliper couldn't move far enough?

Cheaper.

Don't actually need really sharp brakes on a dirt bike

Fit with wire wheels - opposed piston calipers tend to be too chunky on the 'inside' of the disc and clash with the spokes.
