Riding on snow/ice

Is it a good idea to take the bike for a winter ride?
I never tried it but I sure like to try - back side is that I don't want to buy new plastic due to a low sider. Is it something to try at all or is it better to leave the bike in the garage?

Depends on your skill. Personally I would rather eat slugs than go out on the bike in the snow. I have a car a van and a 4x4 so don't need to.

My advice would be stay off the bike. It will end up on its side and if that is not appealing then don't crash for the sake of it..

It is great fun though ,i used to ride my XTR in all weathers but ice is very very tricky ,much prefer the snow .
Went out last sunday for a spin ,covered about 15-20 miles in about 5 hours

Great fun in the snow with the right bike which can take the falls but not the Tenere. I wouldnt risk my travel bike on the ice as it took me a while and lots of hard earned cash to get it just as I like it.

If I had a crosser then I would be out in the snow messing around

Tony660x 26-12-10 10:54

I have parked up my XTX until the snow & ice goes as well. There is nothing to be gained from me smashing my pride and joy up. I will wait. It better clear up soon, my MOT is due mid January.

CaptMoto 26-12-10 12:03

When I had my bike, I went out for a hairy ride with a bird on a fazer and she video it ( the ride that is... the rest is not for your eyes) :BaseballHat_LNY2EG:

Rinding in the snow/ice/traffic & sh*t

Watch the bit near the end, with a red van, first we got lost cause the sat nav took us to a cul de sac which it reckoned was a through-road and instead now was all new houses, then she decides she will lead, because she knew the way, at one points she sits behind a red van, causing me to fall asleep, I was bored stiff and since I have never been one to hang about specially behind vans, I flew past them, saying latersssssssss!

I'm with Mike Wright, If You wear the right clothing and keep warm, and have a winter bike it can still be great to get out and ride in winter.

It's not everyone's cup of tea.

If you have a winter bike set up for the harsh conditions, plus the right tyres you can get grip in the snow.

That said I would not take my Tenere out in these condition.:confused3:

here is a clip of us trying to get out of Gayle {near Hawes} over to Buckden.

Me too..

BTW, I cannot find out from the Dakar web site how to follow individuals, any idea/link please Jen.

Mike Wright 27-12-10 11:47

I think once the race starts there is an applet which shows riders positions.

Heres the listing and number

As Mike says, closer to the time, various new sections pop up on the website - including rider/driver profiles - and the link to the IriTrack site that allows you to enter a particular race number...

Have patience young Skywalker!

ps. It's just taken me six and a half hours to get to bloody Brighton... the Dakar is going to be a breeze in comparison!

maxwell123455 28-12-10 18:15

If you think there might be ice about i wouldnt even bother. Ive commuted all year round on the XTR for 2.5winters and when its snowy or icey its just no fun. But if its been +ve temperatures for a few days i would go out for a ride but only on the main roads just so i could get out and about.

uncle ricky 28-12-10 18:48

I ride mine all year come what may, I use it to ride to work

Thank you for your input. As I've never even gone off-road before I bought the XT i think I'll skip the ice riding for the moment ;-)

Hi all....

Im a newbie here on the forum... I bought a -04 XTR last week and will do some mod during February. I previously had a TTR600 equipped with "wintertires".
Its SO fun to drive on a frozen lake!!!!

So for next winter I will have my XTR with this tyres!!

Well, since the winter in Sweden is loooong, I cant stop riding bike. So what to do?? Get some tyres with spikes and go out and freeze.
This is my new bike, -04 with PCIII, DNA stage1 & 2, GPR exhaust.

midlife crisis 02-02-11 09:48

THAT'S IT!!! I need some tyres like that for the two weeks of snow we get over here it was all a little much for me last year and I got really depressed by it all.

You guys are geniuseses

Depends on youre skill, i go out in the snow just for the fun of it as im sure a lot of us do.
I ride a Ten and it handles better on the slippy stuff better than any bike ive ever ridden, and low slides well (Minimal damage).

cage 03-02-11 07:26

There is an older guy who really LOVES riding any kind of motor bike, he make this track on the ice outside his house every winter and invites people to come and play...
He also snowploughed a 2km long straight track for top speed testing...

Check out the track:

Great video Cage !

cage 11-01-12 08:43

Last weekend was amazing here in mid Sweden. A couple of degrees cold and sunny. The lakes has frozen so I had to try the XT on the ice.
Even though the spikes in the tyres are 6-7mm long its very hard to get enough with traction....

This weekend I spend on the ice together with 20 other bikes....

I followed my friend on his KTM 690 for a while and I did 130km/h as max!!

Everyone should try this sometime!! Welcome to Sweden...

would be great to have your own land/lake to do that really does look fab...

timboo 16-01-12 13:02

think you would need a gps over in the UK to tell you when your coming to thin ice though......

timboo 16-01-12 21:01

Just an observation the riders head looks super imposed doesn't budge an inch what was the cam actually mounted on
