Ive seen these alot before and they normally get good reviews. But you still have to carry it which causes the problem of were do you put it when full?
As 12kg (1litre being 1kg) is quite a bit to place high up on the rear of the bike and to place it in a pannier low down will then out balance the bike.
Ive never heard of anyone doing 500km in one go on a bike let alone an XT660. But when you start touring/adventure/off roading in main land europe there are some places where petrol is either quite far to get to (50-60miles to nearest station, sometimes they dont have petrol or are not open, youve maybe got lost and had to do alot of U turns, or when off roading alot of slow speed stuff causes your MPG to be in the low 30's etc.
Mainly its the ease of not having to go/find a petrol station every time or every other time you stop

FWIW 1 litre of petrol weighs 0.737kg.
I ride an XT660Z so range is not so much of an issue but on a recent ride from Turin back to Blighty on the motorway between Dijon and Reims there is a long stretch of around 100km with just one emergency (pre-pay, predetermined quantity machine, cards only) fuel station where, if I'd stopped, I would have departed with less than a full tank and would have had to stop again before Calais. In the end I stopped after 470km with just over 2l remaining in the tank and reached Calais 105km after the reserve warning LED started flashing just in time to catch the last Shuttle through the tunnel for two hours. Even in Europe big tank range can be very useful.
