Love the rim tape :)

Do NOT order a wavy disc from China! They are utter junk ... there's plenty of good companies around with decent prices on discs!
You might also try getting your disc honed or machined.
Also make sure the bobbins are moving freely - it's supposed to be a floating disc, isn't it?

Thanks for the heads up on the disc.

Chopper 07-01-11 16:59

Have a braking wavey on mine, lovely, dont think it really makes much of a difference, but hey it looks cool! got mine 2nd hand off here

Kamikuza 08-01-11 03:55

Galfer are the big names in wavy's IIRC but I hate the look :D if you're truly desperate and want an OEM one, I can ask my local bike shop who'll order it straight from Yamaha Japan ... but I don't think it'll be cheap - I seem to remember being quoted US$200 each for the TL ...
I wasted so much money and time trying to sort out the brakes without actually just manning up and paying for new discs

Thanks for the offer. If I do need a new disc I will get a new EBC one here in the UK.

Tony660x 08-01-11 19:28

MOT = Passed! :applause:

Got one advisory that the rear tyre in getting close to legal limit. I know its getting low but it has plenty left and certainly enough to be legal for a good while yet.

Front brake is improved using Kevs method to free the disc up as well so no disc needed at the moment either.

Kamikuza 09-01-11 01:55

Sweet! We got to do the MOT-type thing once every 2 years ... once it's passed that, you can do anything you like - I got baffles for my race pipes to get through the sound test :o
EBC are good guys too ... Braking Wave, just came to me - that's the big wavy brand too ... I hate 'em though, they look lame but that's just me ;)

I have been out today for a weekend blast around the country lanes near to where I live. It is very windy and blustery out so anything in exposed roads was "interesting" as I was getting blown all over the place.

The touring screen really is a great bit of kit, totally transforming high speed riding to a comfortable part of XTX ownership. The stock screen though looking very good is a waste of time at high speed, but we all already knew that.

I am going to have to buy a new front brake disc as this one has a slight warp in it so at slow speed you can feel it. Its not urgent to replace so I will use it for the rest of this year and I will keep my eye out on Ebay for a newish second hand one.

I took a few pictures so you can see it without the bash plate or the Yamaha large tuning forks that I recently added and then removed!

Tony660x 23-02-11 22:49

Why did I put this thread in the cleaning section! Dunno!

Anyway bit of an update, I removed the Kev mod Meach fitted as I purchased a second hand PCIII. Fitted that and had a little fun setting it up but worth the effort. The bike runs very nice on the fuel map M412-504. I need to get a few miles to fully appreciate if this map is ideal as there are a couple of others listed that may work well. Initial reaction is the PCIII makes a worthwhile improvement. This is the second time I fitted a PCIII to an XT, the only difference is this time there are no other performance mods. Again still worth it IMHO.

I also removed the reflective blue rim tape and refitted with reflective silver/white in a small attempt to lift the overall appearance of the bike. It looks pretty good (at night) and a certain improvement over the blue. Pics to follow once I get it in daylight. You know me always up for a photo shoot!

Toot toot!

Tony660x 26-02-11 14:28

Well, I took the bike out today to give it a blast and did some off roading as well to see how she handled it.

Once I got it back I gave it a good clean and here she is. I think I am going to leave it now for a while as it is and use if for the summer.

Tony660x 11-03-11 00:20

I have been using the bike most the time of late, weather is pretty good at the moment so I am enjoying it.

The rear tyre had an advisory at the recent MOT and last weekend whilst out and about I noticed a nasty cut in the tyre, it may well have been a manufacturing defect but as the tyre was right at its end of life I purchased another immediatly off Ebay for a delivered price of 114.95.

I tried to get a local dealer to fit it for me but they said 8 days! I told him no thanks so as I have the tyre irons and rim protectors thought I would give it a go. As its the rear I have not bothered with balancing.

Other than trying to break the bead and pop the bead back in place when refitting it was pretty easy but did take me 2 hours not including removal and refitting of the rear wheel which I still have not mastered the technique, as that took me 2 hours itself. Its a right pain if I am honest (refitting the rear wheel that is).

Anyway its all done. Looking forward to tomorrow to see the improvement in handling now I dont have a heavily squared off tyre.

Yes indeed it is... it's just that darn brake caliper.

Tony660x 15-03-11 23:12

Wow what a different a tyre makes! Scrubbed it in over the weekend and I have noticed a large difference in handling. The new tyre has made the bike alot faster to turn and feels sharper when upright & progressive when cornering.

Next and final job is to replace the front disc. Its not bad at all but annoying at slow speed feeling the slight warp in the disc. I think come pay day I am ordering an EBC disc unless someone suggests anything better. I have discounted the wavey ones as I am not sold on them even though they look good.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_1172.jpg

Tony660x 21-03-11 20:44

Well the final part on the bike that actually needed to be replaced is the front disc. Since I have had the bike there was always the feeling of a slight warped disc at slow speeds. Nothing to really be concerned about but I decided to replace it anyway.

I did loads and loads of looking around and finally decided to go for the EBC disc option and use our forum 15% discount as well.

The disc arrived in 2 days as per the FOC Parcel Force 48hr promise and with some trepidation I opened the box to find a lovely looking disc (no photos on the net I could find of an actual XT660X front disc). I was thinking of getting a wavy disc but the cheap ones from China are a risk (I think), the Galfer ones are silly money so I paid partial silly money and opted for this beauty.

Its was a really easy and satisfying job to fit the disc and would recommend them to anyone. I have yet to ride it so I will feed that back at a later date once it has bedded in as there is little on the forum about discs in general, especially for the XTX. The new disc is noticably lighter than the OEM disc as well just for info.

Anyway the obligatory photos.

I just cannot stop tinkering!

As per my other satnav thread I have just fitted a power adaptor & ram mount to accomodate a satnav. I originally positioned it in the centre between the clocks & screen but it rattled a little enough to irritate me so I have repositioned it to the right and its loads better. It also gives me the option to charge my phone and other bits and pieces if I need it too. I like the functionality of it and it is easily removed it needs be.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_1232.jpg

I also saw on Ebay a couple of brand new blue panels, my tank scoops and rear fender are all old and faded so I have replaced all of them except the right hand side scoop, that one will get replaced as soon as I see another bargain like the ones I have just got.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_1191.jpg

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_1227.jpg

My front fender is already new so its looks nice and glossy. I am truly shocked how faded panels can get over time but at least its not expensive to replace them. I need to stop now as this bike is slowly becoming mint! I dont want mint as I will stop riding it!!!

bikespod 03-04-11 23:33

Wow, inspiring stuff. Great restoration job, it looks tops. Although you are clearly a tinkering addict. My engine paint looks like sh!te, so was wondering how you prepped the old surface to receive the new paint. Was it a good old wire brushing and some sort of chemical treatment? I need to do this to mine before it gets any worse.

Tony660x 03-04-11 23:43

I rubbed it down with fine wet and dry, dried it off and undercoated, primed and top coat and finally a coat of clear laquer. Its holding up very well so far and I ride in all the rain we have had.

Tony660x 14-04-11 19:14

After 9 days of waiting my right hand tank scoop plastic finally arrived! Fitted it and it looks superb. Very happy with it, all the panels look glossy and shiney now, they should do as they are all new!

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_1249.jpg

Anyway I am starting to get the urge to change the cans again! Arrrghhh, no, I dont need them but I want them!

Current preference is going like this but in no particular order:
  • LeoVince X3's
  • MTC stainless oval with carbon end pieces
  • Arrow 2 into 1 but keeping the standard headers under the bike
I have been trying to find out who and where I could get a 2 into 1 like the one pictured but with no luck. I think it may be a one off special TBH as they utilise the standard headers and neatly come up out the side into a single can. Not a fan of the traditional 2 into 1 going at the side of the engine, to much "leg warmage" going on for my liking and as I have an X I dont need anymore ground clearance.

Boyd 18-02-12 20:30

Allow me to resurrect an older thread.
Wow Tony! Great job, it is an inspiration. :notworthy:
I am going through the exact same story, but I've only just started.

My tank's in for rust and painting. I'm busy cleaning and scrubbing. The rusty spokes really are a bother.
Forks must be re-hardchromed.
Can these rims be anodised? I don't even know if they're aluminium.

Anyway, good job again Tony. I'll keep coming back to this thread for my inspiration!
Cheers - Boyd

Glad you get something from it. Many apologies for a few holes in photos. I had a clearout in my photobucket account.

The bike was eventually traded in for a cbr600, my 13th bike and you guessed it I had an accident that wrote it off and broke my right ankle, middle toe on my left foot and little finger on my left hand.

Once I get a few saved etc I may well get another XT. They really are a good bike.

Tony660x 14-12-13 20:40

Hello all, I have just come back to the forum to have a good catch-up and see what you guys are all up to now. I have still not got a bike since the CBR accident I had back on 2011. I've basically lost my bottle although the new MT07 has really got me interested again.

Found these photos so thought I would post them up.

This is the result of 40mph and hitting a Deer. The Deer came from the woods to my left and ran into me giving me no chance to take avoiding action other than hit it, go over the bars and roll to a stop. Results below.

I can see why you're tempted - it's a lot of motorcycle for 5200. Makes the XT models look rather overpriced...
