No pictures for this update as when I finished it was pitch black. Bike is back together and running superb (took it for a quick blast and filled the fuel tank up). Had to tweak the gear change lever as it was way to high for me. Removed the cross bar pad as its really annoying when trying to get the ignition key in and out so thats off. May have to re adjust the bars to get the seating postion perfect but a few rides will help refine that.

Had to put the standard cans on due to damaging the 2 link pipe to headers clamps during dissassembly. May be able to salvage a can clamp that goes around the can itself and then I can put carbon cans back on and see what they are like to ride with, they will look alot better if nothing else.

I have to admit the snorkle not being in is annoying me, I am not a fan of the noise the induction makes. I dont mind the loud cans so much but the snorkle not being fitted needs sorting ASAP. Fingers crossed Meach has the one off my bike, if not I will put a wanted add in the classifieds. Already tried fleabay with no luck.

Got to sort our some way of blocking the light from the headlight and wind screen gap, that is off putting riding at night. Possibly just jam a rag in there. Did my very first "Kev" cush drive mod during assembly and its a superb mod. Zero slack in the drive.:eusa_dance:

Just got to wait for the front tyre to arrive and then get that fitted and tomorrow I will do the engine oil & filter change. Its pretty good now but I will feel better once that is completed. I am taking the bike to work tomorrow so should have an opportunity to take a few snaps.

Thoroughly enjoyed the ride tonight, forgot how much torque the XT660 has. Fantastic.

night night!

night night!

I was also surprised after i had a ride on my dads triumph tiger as you have to end up riding it right up top in the revs then got on the XT mid revs just change gear:headbang:

Tony660x 10-09-10 23:05

Almost finished, the new Avon Distanzia front tyre arrived today so thats getting fitted tomorrow. The front disc corrosion will be removed and painted and then the wheel refitted.

I have completed the oil and filter change, that was the first time I have ever done that on an XT. Simplez! Took it to work today and took loads of photos but all of them turned out blurred so either the battery is flat or the camera is broken. I did get 1 ok one. For certain I am getting the carbon fibre cans refitted as soon as possible I dont like the look or sound of the standard cans.

Glad to be nearly finished but at least I am riding an XT again. :blob8:

Tony, guess what I've found while I was mowing the lawn at the back of the garden behind logs, fox holes and what not? Bear in mind it was in the same place where I violently threw it, the day after I bought my bike on Nov 23rd 2004!!

Shall I wrap it for you? I'll give it a hose down first don't worry

Tony660x 11-09-10 19:59

Capt' you are a super star, many many thanks for the snorkle. That has completed the bikes clean up.

Final update

The bike had its new front tyre fitted today, had to have a new tube as well, balanced, got it home and painted the rusty disc brake in silver to match the engine paint.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_0770.jpg

Refitted the CCC carbon stubby cans as the standards were aweful compared. I must admit I had to bodge the header to link pipe clamps but going to order the 2 clamps from Wemoto in a moment.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_0786.jpg

Gave it another dusting over.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_0785.jpg

Job Done!

Only joking, job well done mate :icon_thumright:

steveD 11-09-10 22:11

Nice one that looks very tidy indeed.

maxwell123455 12-09-10 22:40

Now you just need to get out it and ride the think in the mud:096:

hazza2805 13-09-10 11:10

Wonderful transformation! Nice!

Tony660x 14-09-10 22:51

Did the last couple of silly jobs on the bike tonight. I replaced the rusty tax disc holder and got the proper exhaust link pipe to headed clamps from Wemoto, fitted those and they are spot on.

Just got the snorkle to fit and the bike is complete. Took the bike for a spin over the weekend and took a few snaps. I love the torque on the XT and the touring screen really is worth having even if its not pretty.

I still think you should change those crackle finish panels and sell them to me before I go back to Spain. I am sure they will match my Cyclops headlights.:bling:

Can't believe how right that meach bloke got it!

I used an aerosol from Car Plan, it was called Silver (Met) 08. Also on the can was CC YAV089.

Hope that helps.

richardsracingmad 17-09-10 20:39

A really good job....and I love the candy red........

Panels changed

Well I decided to play and swap the metallic panels for my favourite colour blue. I swapped my spare red set (not the metallic ones) with Chopper from here. I got them today and fitted them. I also purchased what I thought was a blue XTX front fender off Ebay. When I got it home and unpacked it I could see it was an R fender. I fitted it to see what it looked like but its silly so have contacted the Ebay seller to arrange a refund/return.

It was advertised as an X fender so I should be ok to return it.

Annoying.

Rubbish picture as it was dark outside.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...x/SAM_0870.jpg

Tony660x 27-10-10 18:01

I returned the R fender and purchased a proper brand new X one from Yamaha. Prices for the basic plastics have more than doubled in the last year. They are probably still cheap relative to other makes but I am tight!

Only problem is my second hand blue panels have weathered a little so the new parts really stands out!

I may get a Yamaha sticker for the rear plastic as this panel does not have one that should be there. Then thats about it for mods I think, I am really happy with the bike overall.

Great job Tony, you could never tell that was the same bike!

I still have them, they are up for sale but if they don't sell I may do an urban camo type scheme with them.

Fozzer 13-11-10 07:25

Ok I know I have been away for while ( work commitments a baby boy etc etc )
what the hell has happened.
1. Tony yet ANOTHER XT
2 It's Meach's ! !.

Got to say Tony you have done a cracking job though.
When ever we went out i always saw the back of Meach's bike :-)

Tony660x 13-11-10 09:32

Cheers Fozzer, I am very pleased with it. Good price and a little tarting up but I think this will be my last one for a while now, I plan to keep this bike now for the forseeable future. It simply fits perfect for what I need and does not owe me much.

Just a couple of minor things to do and I am done.

Tony660x 18-11-10 19:35

I know this goes against most of our natural instincts but I have removed and sold the carbon stubbies (cheers Peatbog). I know they are nice but for me they were too loud even (just my oppinion the rest of you will love them!) with ear plugs in so I painted my standard can heat shields satin black (from silver) and then refitted the stock cans.

Wow what a difference, yes it does not rev as free as with the stubbies on and are heavier but its so nice not being defened by the bike at speed and you cannot tell the weight when riding. Its almost electric in feel now and although not as pretty I am happy.

Riding from home very early is a dream as I dont upset the neighbours!

Kamikuza 19-11-10 07:22

IMHO looks nicer in the blue :) get some rim strip tape on there and it'll really pop. Do your fork legs black too :D

Forks in black is on the to do list over the winter period. I tried rim tape a while ago and could not apply it well so abandoned it.

Im with you. i have never liked teh carbon cans. i had them on mine when i got it, first thing to go. I have just put Akros on it. these are the only ones i wanted due to them following the same lines as the OEM cans. and with DB killers in not too loud.

Nice job mate

Kev 19-11-10 11:42

Looks new again.

Tony660x 29-12-10 22:39

Update

Just a bit of an update really.

A few enjoyable and simple jobs etc:
  • I have added tuning fork decals to both radiator scoops
  • I have fitted 10mm precurved reflective rim tapes to the wheels, it looks excellent at night
  • I have removed and sold the bash plate as its not something I needed really as its only used on road
  • I painted the rusted foot pegs as well as they were letting the side down!
  • I replaced most of the hose hose clips from the original pinch type to the jubilee clip type as I noticed a slight weeping from the water pump. A common problem so whilst the bike is not being used got them swapped. A nice easy and cheap preventative maintenance job.
  • I have given the front disc a rubber malleting to try and make the disc free up a little. A tip off Kev (searched the forum) to see if I can remove the ever so slight warped disc kind of feeling. If this fails to get the desired effect I shall order a wavey disc from China.

Tony660x 06-01-11 23:08

Another update - MOT time!

I am just going over the bike before I take it to its MOT on Saturday. I gave the bike a wash and thorough check over. This is the first time I needed to clean the bike as of late as I have not used it much during the recent cold weather/snow/ice etc.

Unfortunately the tuning fork decals had started to peel at the edges during the cleaning process, it looked poor close up so I ripped them back off!

Fingers cross she passes first time.
