Living with the new Super Tenere...
Guys & Gals,
I was asked in another thread to write about living with the new Super Tenere having picked it up yesterday. So here goes..... Here is the bad boy being filled up for the first time... http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276850023 I decided to put my TCK80s on the bike from new so I strapped them on to my old Tenere and hauled them down to the shop. They are from my GSA which I now got rid of - thank God. On arrival I sat on the bike and was amazed at how light it felt and how low it was, a lot smaller than it's "little" brother. Before even starting the engine I whipped the wheels off and stuck the TCK80s on. Taking the rear wheel off was a bit of an education, but not as much as putting it back on ! I spent ages trying to figure out how the "floating" ABS plate located with the rear caliper carrier. Lesson learned there. This was one thing I liked about my old GSA but the Yam bearings will be better I'm sure. Front wheel was a lot easier and more conventional to remove/replace. One thing I did notice was the unusual ABS/TCS "ring". On most bikes (with ABS) it is a ring with holes in it or a toothed cog and when the high points of the cog pass the sensor it sends a signal through the "hall effect" sensor and this is digested by the computer to figure out what is going on. On the ST it has some wierd looking magnetic ring that looks like this: I wonder if Yamaha write this in all languages for other countries !!! http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276849928 Here is a pic of the final drive coupling. Its a bad photo but it shows the square edged toothed splines. Bad design. There are no bevels on the teeth and they are pig to get back together. My old Pan Euro had a similar set up but with the edges smothed out so the whel could be put back on easier. (Does that make sense ?). The cush drive looks to be more substatial than the 660 and it was so tight I had trouble putting it back together. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276851273 Here is the bike with tank bag, large screen, crash bars, Halfords style lights and proper tyres. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276851581 Here is a piccy of the Heated grip controller and switch for the PIAA (Halfords !) lamps. Controller location looks NAFF. Will think about moving it lower and inboard a bit more. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276851737 Toolkit, as is normal on new bikes - pathetic. Don't even think about changing a wheel. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276851846 The rear shock is adjustable, but only for rebound. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276851973 One of the things that did disappoint me was the rear rack. I need to put a 52 litre top box on for shopping etc and on my old BMW it was easy. On the ST it is not. Here are some pics of what is at the back. The Base... http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276852265Next the Yamaha top box fitment - same as the 660 - not sure if it fits though. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276852536 And lastly the plastic top cover. It is strong but it is still plastic. It may however be the only way to fit my box on. OTOH, the box and fitting plate are plastic too so we will see. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1276852568 |
So what did I think ?
I love it. I love it. I love it. I love it. I love it. I have only managed to ride it for about 16 miles so the comments need to be taken in that context. The bars were a bit low so I have sorted that. The bike was very easy to use. Low seat, light weight and the bike turns in very easy. It does however have the TCK80s on and I have nor ridden it wirth the supplied boots so I cannot compare them. I do however know that the TCKs make bikes turn easier. The switches are all in the correct places (unlike my old GSA) and the gearbox is as smooth as can be, again, unlike my old GSA. I have to agree with a comment made by "Spike" (or "Sp!ke") on ADV, he said "this could end up being the thinkling mans adventure bike". Have agree with him. It was so easy to use. Its early yet so more to follow. |
Interesting and informative Ray, keep the reviews coming, there's no substitute for information from experience and miles. Really glad you like it already. Will it be at Ripley?

Good to hear you're enjoying it so far Ray, don't forget the preload adjustment on the shock as well! I agree about it feeling very small. In a good way.

Congrats Oldgitray and ENJOY!!! Greetz, Hans. P.s.: because I'm totally happy with my 660Ten and the price of the S10, withhold me from gettin' one! |
Reet chuffed you're getting off to a good start with the S10 Ray, I'm very jealous....going to get a piggy bank and start saving for one - they're awesome. Keep the reviews coming please!

Huge congrats Ray, you deserve it. Let us know how you find it 2 weeks down the line. Certainly looks like a mean machine.
Thanks for the pics |

Glad you like it Ray. If it wasn't for the cost I would have one.
|
Looking forward to seeing you (and the bike) at Ripley Ray!
btw. I was in P&H in Crawley the other day, and they had a silver Super Ten in the window - not registered, but seemingly not sold either... maybe they could be convinced to put it on as a demo? J xx |
Took the S10 to Silverstone today. Got some vibes through the bars and my right hand went numb. I adjusted the bars again (up) and this alleviated it. I have short arms and legs and have been called a silverback on numerous occasions.
On the way back I did not have this problem and the bike seemed to be a lot smoother having now covered over 100 miles. The reserve came on at 180 miles and I filled up at 185 having used 18 litres = 47mpg. I was playing with the average fuel thingy and it seemed to use a lot less fuel on the way home. It showed 63mpg between Luton and Hertford. One thing that did impress me was the low down grunt in top gear, despite being restricted to 4k revs it was very strong, even in touring mode. I have now fitted a Givi 52 litre top box an Autocom and my Zumo 660. I like my luxuries. Also SWAMBO likes the back rest on the top box as it makes her feel more secure. The MP3 player helps immensely when driving up the M1 in endless roadworks. ( I have had to fit a MIC cut off switch to SWAMBOs helmet as she sings her heart out all the time !) I am getting used to the bike now and am very impressed at the way it handles at roundabouts even when 2 up. It just eats the weight. I've been looking at the service manual and it appears that most things can be done be even a mildly capable DIY mechanic. The only time that I would need to take it in to the dealer is for the valve clearances, every 24k miles and that is mainly due to shims being used. None of the BMW "take me to a dealer for a service" type signals on the dash. Snigger... |
Glad you finally got the BIG TEN Ray, she looks great way better with the nobblies and crash bars etc fitted.
Yamaha ought to use her for some proper press shots. Enjoy, as for the seat height bar a few katoms I think the little Ten is a leggy girl, rode a Stelvio the other day and the seat was very low in comparison :happy6: keep em rollin |
Very nice Ray well done mate, you are now crowned the King of XT's :icon_king:
I would love to ride one, keep us all updated.:respeck: |
What can I say, thank you very much Kev.
|
That means there were at least 2 Ten's @ Silverstone yesterday then, although mine isn't a Super..
Rode the K12S up on Friday and had all the agro of changing out of and into leathers. Found the XT on Sat and Sun much easier with leaving riding kit in the panniers and just having a helmet to leave. |
new xt1200z
hi just want to know if YAMAHA are doing any road test ? I have asked my local dealer, but he said he dos not think, they will be getin a demo bike? which i think is bad, would of like to have had a Road test. looks like i be stickin with my XT660Z.
|
It also depends on yer dealer, if they have a demo available; mines got one and he had to make a schedule, because there's so much interest for test-ridin'!! I'm glad I had the chance to take the S10 for a spin last friday morning; not that I intend buying one, but ya can always taste!!
Greetz, Hans. |
I've been asked by PM to show some pics of the Givi box, so here goes with others of the Autocom and Zumo.
The Box.. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277188183 The Plate...(form my BMW - basic fitting.) http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277188233 The fittings from above. The front fitting needed a hole drilling in the silver Yamaha (plastic) plate. Not nice but necessary. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277188051 Now this is a bodge. The fixing on the right of the picture was good and fixed through existing hole(s). The fixing on the left of the picture is not pretty by very necessary. The sliver top plate and the black Yamaha top box fitting plate (see previous pictures on page 1) are not fixed together at the rear and are about 3mm apart. to alleviate this I placed a spacer between the two (so as not to strain the top plate) and this was taped in place. I then needed to fix the Givi plate to the lower black plate for stability. Hence the odd fixing position. It is a bodge that works but I will be looking to replace it with something prettier soon. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277188391 Another problem with the big 52 liter box is that the pannier lids hit/foul the top box as in the pic. They can still be opened, but need to be bent slightly to do so - not good. Better to slip the top box off first. I positioned the box in a position most comfortable for SWAMBO, she likes it too. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277188827 Whilst I am at, some pics of my Autocom and Zumo 660 fitting. Autocom under seat. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277189034 Autocom front connection. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277189085 Autocom rear connection. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277189128 And the power take off. Spliced into the power socket lead on the dash. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277189191 Now the Zumo 660. Notice the new lower location of the heated grip control. Again, a temporary bodge but its much better and looks "in place" as opposed to "out of place" in my other picture on page 1. As for the Zumo. The RAM mount supplied with it will only allow it to be located at the ends of the handlebars as the fixing loop will not fit over the centre, fatter, part of the handlebars. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277189247 Just for completeness. A pic of the tank hinged up. Note the two breather tubes at the bottom. They were accidentally pulled off initially on lifting the tank. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277189612 This can be rectified by unclipping them as shown in the in the lower picture and feeding some slack back towards the tank prior to lifting. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277189644 One last pic. Some 3" mortar tubes... OK tool tubes http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...g?t=1277190875 I still have had not time to use the bike due to my imminent house move into my Motorhome ! Off topic, I called the motorhome dealer yesterday to see what progress they had made with some mods on it, only to be told that they were excluded from their site by the fire brigade due to a massive fire. I do not know at the time of writing if I still have a motorhome at all. Oh well, I still have my bike !! Edit update: Motorhome is fine - Whew ! |

Hi Ray
Not posted much on here since I got my 660Z. Now looking at a possible deal on the 1200 and wondering about accessories. The panniers I know about from the 660 but what do you think of the quality of the engine bars and lights? Very expensive, but worth the money? Any experience of the tall screen at all? To be honest I've really enjoyed the 660, but it's just lacking a bit for the fast roads getting me to where I really want to be. I've got a bigger bike but you can't ride 'em both at once, so this possible trade will be a 2 into 1. Don't fancy a BMW much... |

We also saw Jennys (JMo) lectures, brilliant, one about her trip to the USA on her XT660Z and another about her Paris - Dakar Heroes and Legends rally. We were so impressed with the USA one we may not not now take our MH to the US. Anyway .... Jenny :notworthy[1]: As for the bike, whilst at Ripley, Paul from Metal Mule turned up on a silver S10 lent to him by Yamaha. He has made some Pannier racks and a rear rack for the S10. These are the original prototypes and are not powder coated or finished off properly. They are however, very well made. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1869.jpg This shows the rack bolted to the very srtong mountings supplied on the S10. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1868.jpg The last one shows how tidy they are inside and a special permenant seal around the edges. The fixings are bespoke extrusions lined (or rather - cast in place) with the same material used for skateboard wheels etc. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1867.jpg Oh, and they are anodised so they do not turn your kit black. A general view of the 31 liter (left) and 38 litre (right). I have bought a 38 and a 45 which are 50mm wider each side. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1866.jpg Despite running in, only 350 miles so far, I have been playing with the SPORT button, WOW, the bike takes off like a scalded cat. The screen I have put up to the highest setting and it is OK now. It is not much bigger than the stock one. In hindsight, I would now wait till someone makes a slightly bigger one. It is only realy bigger at the upper outer edges. I have'nt had time to test out the crash bars yet or deliberately drop the bike to see what it is like to pick up. The lights however, despite looking a bit out of place are great for parting traffic and make the bike look huge from the front when on. I am at the "in-laws" farm in Dumfries, Scotland at present so when it stops raining I will take it out and play with the TCS and ABS. I am keen to play with the 3 ABS fuses to see if I can disable it without effecting anything else. If it works, I may stick in a switch to turn it off. A guy named Spike ("Sp!ke") on ADV and XT750.com tested the bike out on the ride for life trip. He tested the ABS on and disabled, and it stopped 12m earlier when turned off on a loose surface. So far, the thing that has impressed me most is how easy it is to ride this bike even at very low speeds. IMHO it is a proper ADV type bike. |
Cheers. I've put a deposit on a blue 'un with all the accessory kit apart from crash bars and lights. Would still like to see those in the flesh before deciding.
Feeling a little bit queasy about the amount of money (more than I've ever spent or would think of spending on a car!) but it's too late now... I did like the bike very much when I had a test ride (obviously) and expectations are high that it can do the job of both the 660 on back roads and a big bike on m-ways. |
Adjusting the CO level on the 2010 Super Tenere.
As per most Yamahas, adjusting the CO is relatively easy. I found this in the service manual.
I may have a play around with it to see if I can smooth the bike a bit for my 2 up riding. I like a slightly rich low speed setting. This is not a critisism of the basisc set up. It is just me wanting to play. Warning, Adjust at your own risk and make a note of original settings. 1) Turn main switch OFF. 2) Holding both buttons down, turn on ignition, hold for 8 seconds. All displays are blank except “dIAG” appears in odometer place. 3) Press left button till “Co” appears. 4) Press both buttons for 2 seconds to select “Co”. 5) Press any button to select “1” or “2” cylinder. 6) Press both buttons for 2 seconds to select that cylinder. 7) Press left button to increase, right to decrease value. 8) Press both buttons to return to step 5 (cylinder select) 9) Turn ignition off to finish. |

Alf England have a Blue one for sale
they sold the Silver one ! |
Branson's in Yeovil Somerset have just got one in for sale now. I am going to have a look on Thursday(just interested) not going to buy?
|
Just a couple of piccys that may be if interest.
The "high" screen as advertised by Yamaha and sells for 120. Unfortunately sold to me !!! It was fitted when I got the bike so I am not sure if it has any effect. Aside from what you can see, it does lean back a lot more. The original screen held in front....bit of a rip-off I think. Maybe the screen supports are not substantial enough to go higher. A plus point for the GSA. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1963.jpg A dirty inside view of the Yamaha bash plate. I grounded hard on a large static rock and bent one of the shock absorbing lugs. It worked. It was bent back in seconds. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1955.jpg As I am currently in Scotland and my dealer, Colin Saunders in Knebworth, Stevenage (plug for a good down to earth dealer) so I am doing my own servicing. He gave me the oils and filter when I picked the bike up. Piccy shows the final drive oil. Very matallic in colour !! Does have a magnetic plug though. Unlike the 2 engine drain plugs. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1957.jpg The engine oil change, can be done with the bash plate in place. Left hand drain is for the crankcase and the right hand one is the oil tank. They are seperated inside and this helps to keep the weight down low. Clever... http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG1960.jpg First service took me (whilst learning) about a hour including fabricating things to get the oil back in. Basically, change oil and filter, change final drive oil, check operation of all switches (brake lights/stand), check for leaks and steering for roughness. I do not miss my old 09 GSA.... PS...Yamaha, if I need a warranty claim, this is proof of servicing.....he he he |
Hey Ray, glad you like your S10, but do you miss your old XT660Z Tenere? Because you still run the avatar with the old white one! Time for a change?
Just kiddin', greetz, Hans. P.s.: www.off-the-road.de updated their website and as of now also has lots of stuff for the new XT1200Z Super Tenere, along with the well known goodies for the XT660Z/X/R. |

Whilst in the Isle of Man last month I had a race (sort of) with some mates, an R6, a CBR 600 and an 1198 Ducati from Port Erin to Peel (a twisty mountain back road with no speed limit :toothy5:). I had to keep slowing to let them catch up ! When I asked what the problem was, they all said the pocket rockets could not deal with the bumpy, twisty road. The Ducati rider said he was shaking himself to bits. Me, I did not even think about it and just rode the tits off it thinking they were playing with me. However, when we hit the Ballymona straight, it was a different story... I forgot to add, the guy with the R6 is now considering getting a 660. |
hey mate..
any chance of some nice close up pics of the Yamaha panniers.. and your thoughts on them.. I'm thinking of getting a set however they are not available in Australia yet and I would like to see them as best I can before I order a set.. Are they well made, waterproof and spacious ?? Do you think they are worth the asking price ?? Cheers |
Quote:
I'm not sure what you mean, are you not going to get a set automatically as a "First Edition" package ? Anyway, IMHO, it depends what you will use them for. If you just intend to commute or drive mostly on black stuff then they are adequate, so far mine have been reliable and waterproof, however, they do have one big flaw (again - my opinion) they have no support at the rear lower corner and in the event of a crash on uneven ground there is a strong possibilty of the boxes snapping their mountings from the front top due to the exessive torque that would be placed on it by the weight of the bike (if say it landed on a rock at the lower back corner). As I understand it, this happened at least twice during the "Ride for Life" trip. I even made a rear rack with supports to stop this for my 08 XT660Z as this has the same problem. Me, I have a set of Metal Mule ones on order. Hope this helps. Ray |
Quote:
No in Australia, we have the standard bike and we have the "Outback Edition".. the Outback comes with all the bits.. I purchased the standard bike hence my questions on whether the stock panniers are any good.. Thanks for your comments, I think I'll wait for the aftermarket to start making racks etc.. The MM's look nice, however are too expensive to ship to Oz.. |
Hi folks,
Not posted for a while and Keithblade just gave me a nudge, so here is a couple more pics of Wallace. Playing on the beach at Aberystwith,Wales....A bit of a slide ! http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_IMG_0093.jpg First of many...I was gob smacked how easy it was to pick up, even with a full fuel tank. Propably the same or easier than the 660, certainly a lot easier than the GSA....he...he...he... http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_IMG_0090.jpg One with the new Melal Mule luggage and rack. Much better, stronger and bigger. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...Ray/ADVpic.jpg Lastly, the boss and her husband on the Swanage ferry. http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...d_CIMG2110.jpg |
