How much oil?

I will service my xtx in a few days(oil, oil filter, spark plug) and i still dont know how much oil goes in my bike.I read 2.9l but someone else say with oil filter change 3.5litres?? Would Motul 5100 10w40 be good choice?
Thx

You will need approx. 2.5-2.6l of new oil with oil filter change afaik. Total amount is 2.9l including dry sump reservoir. Take care to stick to Yamahas oil change procedure and double check oil level according to manual. Do not overfill. Motul 5100 should be perfectly ok.

Thx :)

Perfect description. I completely agree with you. I don't know this oil. I use Bardhal XTC 60.

Take the bike out and get it warm then drop the oil, if you,ve not done it before on the XT put a big rag over the front wheel and brakes I use the oil you are asking about and have had no problems with it and was told by the Yamaha dealer that its as good as the Yamaha oil.
Cheers BEAR.

All of the above and also, Kevs top tip to me.

Before you take out the drain nut at the front of the engine block. Refit the oil filler cap/dipstick.
Then take the nut out.
Then slowly unscrew the oil filler cap/dipstick until the oil runs out freely.

If you take the oil filler cap/dipstick out completely, and then take out the drain nut at the front of the engine, it fires oil all over your front wheel. Hence the towel that Bear and I both needed to mop up after the first oil change.

You don't need to worry about this with the bottom nut drain nut.

maxwell123455 01-03-10 20:13

Just remember youve got two oil nuts to do, one between the exhaust pipes and one under the engine.

Also when filling the bike back up you need to do this 1ltr at a time, then start the engine and let it run for 10-15 secs, then fill some more. This allows the oil to go from the frame/tank into the engine. If you dont do this the bike will say its full when its not really

Isn't the correct spark plug. You have to use CR 7 E. I don't know if CR 8 E is colder or warmer than CR 7 E, but certainly can cause problems.

definitely would not be using a different spark plug other than CR7E unless it's the CR7EIX with is the iridium version

I did an oil change not long ago and needed close to 3.5L.. but i let it drain for a fair while and tipped the bike to either side to get all the oil out, that was without oil filter change also but i did drain the oil filter using the oil filter drain screw

Great,i replace the spark in the shop for cr7e,also i put new air filter.

I wish I had found this thread earlier. I just did my first oil change and I was busy for a long time wiping the tyre and the floor including carpet from oil after I had loosened the exhaust drain nut. I could not believe it would be so much oil left to drain! Add to that my container hole was to small so it did not fill quick enough, so I got roughly 1-1.5 litres of oil everywhere....

javahouse 17-11-10 00:03

...so, just out of interest, what happens if you over-fill? me not being used to dry sumps and all.
Thanks
Rob

Hi javahouse,
an engine is just an air pump and when the piston goes up and down air gets shifted around the crankcase, if there is to much oil in the crankcase it will cause crankcase pressure build up , and that can cause oil to be blown out of seals, engine can smoke, and oil pumped into the breather, Make no mistake about it to much oil is a bad thing, and if people say if an engine is overfull just let it burn off they are talking s**t. hope this answers your question.

Mmmm, was just curious; the XT is drysumped - so can the having too much oil in hydraulic the scavenge pump or is there a PSV in the return to the frame?
Obviously I'm asking because I overfilled mine. Wondered if there was any lasting damage that could be done. I only overfilled by a couple of hundred mills, but I think the scavange pump was filling the frame completely.

Hi rob, as long as your engine has not pumped any oil out or the engine has not been smokeing (as this would damage the cat) it will be fine, just correct the level

Thanks guys - I did do, the same night. It's been OK, but I was just curious.
Just siphoned maybe 200ml out with a piece of copper tube I found lying around in the garage. Oil syphons pretty easy when it's hot, and I just set the drop on the tube to be about the level I wanted.
