tenere tank on the "R"
 

Has anyone fitted the tenere tank onto the R, thats exrtra 7 lts and possibly a simple job ?

Having had both I would see a few problems.

1) The electrics/pipes should be quite easy as they use the same system.
2) The fitting of the tank is likely to be a problem as the frames are different. (although without seeing both naked and side by side its difficult to say)
3) The extra fittings on the Tenere tank (i.e. the protective covers and the fittings for the indicator/headlamp support) would make it look a bit silly.
4) I thinktThe seat stay at the back of the tank is different as the tool kit is stored at the same place.
5) I would guess the cost of the tank is enormous as there is a lot to it, not least of which is the completely unnecessary but beautiful metallic paint job.

There is a company here in Brazil that fabricates 22,5lts plastic tanks for Xt660s. See the link bellow:

It costs R$ 550 which is around 330 USD. I'm not sure how the shipping works. Let me know if you need any help with translation.

Thats a bloody big improvement on the stock tank. Do they paint them up for you too or is that extra?

I'm not sure the option is even available. The do mention though that it comes in black or blue. If I'm not mistaken Robson Jabora/SC (member here) has used it for long trips.

Got in touch with them and they DON'T recommend painting it because the tank could "perspirate" some gasoline which could create bubbles on the paint.

I know exactly what you are saying, I've witnessed this on other bikes in the past causing stickers to peel off and "yellowing" of the tank.

Its a shame as in my opinion the bike looks better with the tank in matching colours.

Thats still loads of money, do you honestly need a bigger tank?
We have two 2lt fuel bottles in cages on the ally boxes and a 5lt fuel can held in a custom bracket that sits on the pillion foot peg. Gives us about 24lts and a 320 mile range. We have the option of leaving the cans empty when not needed and having fuel in the 2lt bottles makes it easy to fill the stove.

By coincidence I spent this morning uming and ahing about the gilimoto tank. The problem is that they don't seem very keen on shipping the tank outside Brazil -- I think that Robson has asked them (and he speaks the lingo slightly better than google translate...).

On top of that, I looked at courier services and the cheapest seem to be of the order of �300+ to ship a "volumetric" weight of 15kg from Brazil to the UK which is more than the cost of the tank! I have no idea how you might use a sea freight company to ship a small parcel without it getting lost/crushed. And then there's import fees etc. etc..

I then wandered the web looking for alternatives and I'm suddenly tempted by the Acerbis front fork auxilliary tank (�60?) but, rather than put it on the front forks, glue/tape/tie/bungee it to the back of my panniers -- one either side for an extra 10l. I've dug out the dimensions (10 x 9.5 x 4.5 inches) which would fit snugly on the back without them being overly exposed in a crash.

Current research is on how to plumb them into the existing fuel lines.

As noted above, the hard core will just strap a jerry can or two to the back and carry a funnel. I need to learn how to bend bits of metal and create a harness...

My trouble is I'm just tooo lazy and I hate having to go into petrol stations and take gloves/helmet off n fiddle for me wallet. I personally wouldnt gain from cans/bottles etc. I just want a big tank to fill up and leave alone for weeks n weeks :D:D:D

What about
 

Here in Australia you can buy a 12 litre fuel bladder (from liquid containment), when it only has about 5 litres in it I strap mine to the tank but with it full I put on the rack and back part of the seat. The best part is that once it is empty you just roll it up and strap it to the rack.

It is a shame that a bolt on 25 litre isn't available, I wonder how many orders/inquiries safari would need before they seriously looked at making one.

A mate has a yamaha WR450 with a 26L safari tank and he has no problems with fuel weeping (gee that as a concept sounds like it is leaking).

The only problem Jonno has with the WR is that it so uncomfortable on long trips and that by the time the tank his empty everyone has stopped to fill up anyway.

The tank from the Tenere is a costly option that would be a pain to fit.

How about using an Acerbis tank 22ltr designed for the TTR's or XT 600's these could probably be made to fit and would be much cheaper to buy :sbike:

i have just ordered a 22.5 lt tank from gilimoto all up including shiping $470.00 dilivered to australia .i will still need to carry extra fuel to cross the simpson desert should be fun .

Laurie - please keep us updated with your experiences. We're planning to do the Simpson next year sometime and the R will definitely need plenty of capacity.
