What's the extra breather pipe for?

marjani 24-04-09 22:57

cheers.

As this thread has been used to discuss lots of different aspects related to DNA filters, I guess it is suitable to share my experience with the stage 1 air filter I just received today for my ktm 690 smr.

First of all I have to say the build quality does give a very good impression. I did not expect less as I already had been a happy DNA customer when I still had my XT. It was easy to fit and it even looks "sexy" compared to the stock one :)

So, let's go to the performance. As it is a stage 1 filter I did not expect any huge improvements (it is not a stage 2 filter) but I have to say I am really happy with it:

- it has removed the slight surging the ktm had. Now riding very slow in town is much nicer.
- it has also smoothed out the on/off effect I noticed when getting on the throttle again after having stopped.
- I also think the bike has a bit more oomph. Not a lot more but still noticeable.

So I'd say I am again a DNA happy customer and I can only recommend them

Another guy from the spanish forum got a filter for his Aprilia Dorsoduro and told me the bike is really much smoother and nicer to ride now. He seemed very surprised because he did not expect so much. I guess not only the filters for the XTs are superb but the full range.

Dear Warnabrother,
Your question concerning filtering efficiency of the DNA filters is already answered in detail.
Visit the following link:
http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=9766

And checkout the in-depended test done by the French motorcycle Magazine MOTO.
Be sure that all the DNA High Performance Filters have a filtering efficiency off 98% and over. A filtering efficiency that No other aftermarket performance filter can match.
Thank you for your interest,
Best regards,
Dino Nikolaidis

Anyone care to explain the difference in cost between a DNA and K+N,as in a stage one DNA is 44 as opposed to 25 for a K+N(e-bay price)

Kev 07-10-10 23:25

One flows more air than the other. More flow better sealing on the DNA.

And as some one who works in the motorcycle trade!! over priced, even if it does work very well.

19 difference, about the same as a tank of fuel then - Tenere tank that is! For something that will last the life of the bike, well worth it I say.:eusa_clap:

Been in the trade for 30 years now & would agree with you they do come at a cost. They do work so I don't mind paying for something that works.

If you are on your bike long term then these filters pay off, I am on my 3rd New XTX over 5 years & have moved the filters from bike to bike so in my case I have saved money on filter replacements. I sold my stage 1 & 2 filters the other day & got back 70% of my money, now you can't resell Yamaha's paper used filters.

Also I have not seen Yamaha offer a replacement filter that offers more HP gains & more filtered surface area, so at least we have a 2nd or 3rd options with K&N & DNA.

If you are not looking to gain any HP out of your bike leave it standard & use paper filters is my advice, for the rest of us I would only use & gladly pay the price for a freer flowing filter or air box.

Don't get me wrong,i'm not coming from the Yamaha filter angle more K+N,i'm resigned to paying the going rate for a DNA stage 2,but see no reason to pay though the nose for a stage 1 as opposed to a K+N,i'm not even suggesting that the DNA be reduced to the same price, but for heaven sake make some kind of competitive effort, charging what they do for the 1 is just a P take.

Re K+N I run 3 other bikes and have one in all of them.
