mods for siberia
i,ve recently bought an 07 R, I,m meeting walter colebatch of "SIBIRSKY EXTREME.com in vanin on the pacific in july and riding along the bam railway to novobirsk around 2500mls of the unknown. The biggest problem i think will be carrying enough fuel, has anyone here any idea of what sort of mpg on rough tracks i can expect.? The otr tank is currently 900eu. which is out of the question. I believe someone had a can made up to replace the left hand silencer, but that thread has been blocked from me.
Any help will be gratefully received. |
Firstly, welcome to the club.
Not sure how much a full tank will take you on rough tracks, but I got around 180kms before the reserve light came on when riding on muddy fire trails. The fuel tank you mentioned will only work if you have a 2-1 system, ie. no can on the left side of the bike ;) |
:006:,i was at the touratech event when Walter left ,bloody long way and good luck to him

here are the pics you looking after. This can is special made by my dearest friend Hartger (
http://hartgers-radiateuren.nl/; Hartger rerouted my radiator pipe for the custom 2in1 Trinity system). It can carry extra 5ltr of fuel; not connected with the main tank so you have to do some magic ;)
Like Denny already said, you need a 2in1 system for this mod. Cheers. marcel |
Thanks for your replys, i think it would be wise to allow an extra 7/10ltrs, i know theres one stretch between where the train stops ,of around 300mls.whats between there i don,t yet know. That exhaust mod seems great but a slightly different shape, i want to keep as light as poss. and the weight as low as poss.

I don't know if ya run panniers, if so ya could attach a plastic jerrycans to it(2x2,5lt will give ya 20lt, that'll get ya about at least 400km's far). This is done a lot, by enduro riders with small tanks. They come in different sizes, the choice is yours. Good luck and ride safe!

fuel distance
Rode across Kazakhstan on my XT660R which was the roughest, and longest stretches with no fuel of the whole 42,000km trip. Actually never needed the 2 x 5L jerry cans I was carrying on top of the panniers, but it was reassuring. 25km/l is what I averaged EVERYWHERE. Fuel light would come on at 255km after 11 litres used. 340 kms just about doable... and then of course you have 10 litres to call on, giving total mileage of almost 600 kms. You can also carry half a litre in the old MSR stove!

Thanks nick,25kms/lt. blimey thats good,i just came back from a bike meet in belgium, cruising at 80mph on the auotoroute 175mls. on 13.5lts.
A friend is making me a tank to replace the left /h silencer about 7 lts, with a pipe running to the top of the main tank, which will be sealed. the idea is the vacuum in the main tank will empty the auxillary one first. Heres hoping it,ll work. With the main tank drilled it,ll hold nearly 16lts.,i,m sure that,ll be enough. I,m intrigued by how you got 25kms/lt though ,thats around 70mpg. |
About your idea for the main tank vacuum drawing the fuel from the auxillary tank. You'd have to seal up the breather in the main tank, and have the only breather for the whole system in the top of the auxillary tank for it to work... is that right?
I rode with another guy in India, he was on an XTR too, and had come across the middle east. He got 25km/l too. Only mods were foam air filter, iridium spark plug and Metal Mule 2 into 1 exhaust system. Not enough to make much of a difference I think... isn't 25 normal? |
I,ve just taken the filler cap to pieces , and put a small spring under the ball bearing that should seal the tank . i,ll drill a hole and fit a banjo for the fuel intake from the auxillary tank, which it will now breath through.
The tank is square section 100mm 600mm long and holds 6lts. that will give me nearly 22lts ,with the main tank drilled. If i could manage 25kms/lt thats a range of550kms to empty which hopefully will be enough. The bike 07 model surges a bit at slow speeds up to,30 mph i,m hesitant to try any mods ,in case the fuel; consump. goes up.Does anyone have any ideas.? |
