Symtec heated grips

Hi folks,

Picked up my new steed on Friday. Not done many miles yet as it has been very cold with snow and loads more salt spread all over the roads. Anyway, thought I would start adding some bits to the bike and have ordered a set of symtec heated grip things from www.windingroads.co.uk . I'm wondering if anyone can provide any tips for installation? What I really wonder is how difficult it is to get the original grips off and should I be able to remove them and get them back on without damaging them or should I order new grips? I've heard that hairspray is a good way to get them back on over the elements, anyone agree or have other ideas?

Cheers,
Stoo

Dont know about the z but on the r just heat the grips with a hairdryer and they should come off quite easy ,i wired mine to the lights so i cant forget to turn them off ,hairspray works a treat to get the grips back over the heating element and hold the grips in place

These ones ?

I personally installed the oxford's Hotgrips on both a GSE500 and my VFR750m and I've been very happy with them.

I would be cautious with just fitting a heating resistance under the original grips.
1- would the grip fit back with the added thickness ?
2- would the original grips survive the heat ? (my oxford hotgrip can be really hot on max setting)

I have both sets ,oxford on the xt and symtec on the ccm and have to say the symtec are better as they get warmer due to only having to get the heat through a thinner grip so less bulky and they are paper thin so you will have no problem replacing your original grips

aye i would agree with jasext . tryed all sorts of grips over the years and the symtec are as good as any other . i wrapped a bit of insulating tape around the symtec heat pads befor slipping back on the grips found it a bit easier that way

Cheers guys, sounds like this should be within my abilities. I had a look at the Oxford ones but like the idea of keeping the original and less chunky grips.

I got the original grips off my Tenere by squirting WD40 under the end of the grips (using the long red tube with the can to push under the grips) and carefully twisting back and forth until they suddenly slid straight off.
You would have to make sure they were completely dry of WD before re-fitting them though!

hi recently carried out the symtec gripheater fitment to my tenere.

first remove the grips; bar end off, gently slide a blunt screw driver between grip and bar /trottle tube, i use brake /electricle cleaner sprayed along the screwdriver to loosed the grip glue-may need it in a few places around the bar. fit the heaters as described.i refitted the grips with a light spraying of the cleaner which seems help the grip slide on and when it dries bonds the grips quite firmly, at this point i would normaly lock wire in place but it doesn't seem nessasary

the wiring i got the power feed and earth from the black connector behind the panel at the back of the lamps[ i also use this to power a socket for gps/phone charger]it is protected by a 10amp fuse which also provides for the side lamps so you should add an fuse to the circuit you are adding![the white plug i got of a toyota wiring loom] you may need to get a couple of appropiate wiring blades to fit, perhap a trip to the yamaha dealers for the proper connector would be best. the connector is switched with the ignition so hopefully no flat batterys, the black wire is the earth

i ordered the toggle switch and had to make a bracket, i used some fine stainless and attatched to the clutch lever bracket for handyness[should be a picture below]

i hope this is some help stoic

Thanks for all the info and very helpful pics. My kit has arrived and I'll give this a bash over the weekend. I have gone for the rocker switch option.

I know this was 2 1/2 years ago.... but,

I noticed you are using foam grips now (or in the Lakes at any rate), do these work OK with the Symtec heaters ? No meltdown, foam stuck to gloves etc ??

It's a long story, that started with "your head bearings are getting a little stiff" at the last service :YellowCrazy_J8GDC6:

I fitted foam grips with these things underneath.

The foam doesn't transfer the heat very well and they get lukewarm, not hot (and bear in mind i'm wearing thick gloves too).

No meltdown after being left on for over an hour at a time.

Easy to fit using double sided tape and a squirt of white spirit. Grips go right over the top. Lockwire and hey presto.

I'm not convinced personally and will probably take them off in the summer.
