Any contributions to the thread? anyone? I don't mean to hijack the thread or stimulate people to ventilate their anger towards their bikes and manufacturers. What I think would be a productive discussion would be a general list of things that broke (or not) on their bikes. Every bike/car/mechanical project can and will fail eventually but I think that it would be nice to know what problems one could expect should we find a pattern.
Robson's gear problem for instance, although not desired he has ridden 99k km on it so lots of "smile per mile" on the many trips he's made. Is that something we could expect from this engine? If so, around this mileage or has it happened to someone else earlier? Is the frame prone to cracks? If so, under what kind of use/abuse? The idea here is simply to get know our XT660 project a bit better so trashing and bashing is not productive. Cheers and peace! |

Zensurf, mate I've had my bike for just over four years now & have clocked up about 45000kms (I'm a fair weather rider :p) Problems to date...headlight bulb was blowing last summer, was due to vibes...easily fixed. Recently I've had bigger problems, namely the ecu going norman bates on me. Thankfully with the help of the Capt and Kev I should have that fixed shortly. Otherwise I'm all happy with her. I ride her very hard when solo and also do a fair bit of two up fully loaded touring with the Mrs. |
Denny, it's just heat shrink cable cover as you get in any electrical stores and they come in various size. :coastguard:

Well Iv had mine 3 days so Im not much help, but for those 3 days I would certainly not think twice about going for a long trip because I feel very comfortable with the xt as I have with all Yamaha,s I have owned in the past and had next to no problems with Yam,s.

A quick update, have now owned the xt for two weeks and put 450 miles on her riding mostly suburb and twisties, and I find this bike very good indeed, leaning into corners then blasting out is no problem and as good if not better than a sports bike.
I read that some unfortunate owners have had starting problems but touch wood starting my own xt is another positive as I barely touch the start button and its away, so looking forward to the next 25,000 miles. |
