Gps Mounting
Those of you with Sat Navs... Where did you mount it? On the bar over the clocks or on the handlebars? If on the bar above the clocks... Any problems with vibration? Many thanks...

I made a bracket that fastens to the hand guard mount its just a bent piece of alloy with two holes drilled in it but it works fine

TomTom Rider
I orignally put mine on the handlebars between the supports with the ball mount.
It died of vibration when kept at constant high revs. I have now made a soft foam rubber mount atached to the bar over the clocks. Its not finished yet as I have had to modify my TomTom to take power from a car charger. When its finished I will post piccys. Its not pretty but it is insulated from vibration. |
in the clear pocket on top of the tank bag- insulated from vibration by the fact that the bag is soft, and protected from water ( my gps is my phone/PDA )

Garmin Zumo & TT Anti-vibration mount
I made my own mount extender (the same thing that TT charge a small fortune for) and fitted it to the GPS mount bar. I'm fairly sure there is another thread about this already, but here goes.
I did have it on the handlebars, using the RAM mount and it was fine, no problems. I just didn't like it out of my field of vision so I moved it to thr GPS bar. I'm not sure what Yamaha were thinking but the GPS bar is useless, because of the screen you cannot actually get a GPS mounted on it! So into the workshop. http://www.smokingtailpipes.com/Gallery/PA090153.JPG |

Although at low revs (tickover) the whole subframe (lights, clocks, screen etc) vibrates - I think the subframe mountings need a bit more strenghth to them - it is only a couple of lenghts of 10-15mm steel! Power is provided from an auxilary circuit as I have 12v power take off, heated grips, and ther'll be some driving lamps when I get the change to fabricate a bracket..... |
I don't like stuff stuck high infront of me
So i mounted mine off the handle bar mounts with a homemade assembly....It works very well and does not vibrate at all http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u..._1278Large.jpg |
I have tried to mount my 60CS on the cross brace, using the OE bike mount.
In order to overcome the vibrasion, I have filled the gap with rubber pieces; unfortunately, still GPS shuts itself after a few seconds after the bike accelerates. I was planning to order the touratech part for this purpose. The one which is mounted on top of the instrument panel. I thought that the vibration there could be less there. |
Interesting thread...
I have a Garmin 2610 (which by it's size probably damps out a lot of the vibrations itself - it is the size of a brick!). However, it is also a fantastic GPS for on-bike use, so I don't care! - Simple, intuitive and above all robust... I use a RAM cradle and short arm, with the ball connector on the handlebars between the bar clamps - no problems - it's easy to reach the touch screen, and fills in the 'gap' between the instrument panel and the bars. Perhaps the Tourtech cradle will help in the instances described above?, but I tried their version for the 2610 last year (when it was fitted to my XR650) and the standard rubber one did nothing, while the foam pad MvG version was excellent up to 50mph, when it would start to vibrate so badly (on the foam pads) that you couldn't read the screen! Perhaps their versions for other (smaller/lighter) GPS units are better in that respect? - just be aware before you spend a lot of money... personally I would recommend the RAM system every time... http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC09974.jpg xxx |
I've put my Zumo550 on top of the clocks:
