Tools
Was thinking about this thread:
Tener General > Toolkit Would be nice to have sort of a minimum requirements list of tools that a Tenere driver far from civilization should have. Not spare parts etc, just the tools. Suggestions? |

That will give you a pile of tools you need. Then spend some time looking at the pile and see what you can get that combines as many as possible. Then add the emergency fixes (Pliers, cutters, Leatherman, electrical tape, Cable ties, length of wire etc) For example you can get Screw drivers that allow Sockets to be fitted to the end, see if this will allow you to srink the pile. Also you can get Screw drivers that fit a scoket wrench. Check off road online bike shops, KTM do a good t bar hex that has the sockets that fit on the end (Only any good if the sizes fit the Yam). But when you buy, buy good quality especially open end spanners, Screw driver ends. |
I carry most of the tools that I might need, including a small socket set that includes some small spanners. I also carry a long series socket and wrench for the rear spindle nut as this is not included in the standard kit and as a minimum you would need to adjust the chain. Chain oil, WD40, gaffer tape, cable ties, spare connectors and a few terminal connectors, fuses bulbs, hand cleaner and disposible gloves. A Pucture repair cannister and spare specs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:toothy5:

My current tool kit contains the following (which is basically the tool kit I use for my XR's but with specific items exchanged with those for the Tenere):
• 1/4" short ratchet (Halfords Professional) • 1/4" T handle (approx 8 inches long) • 1/4" extension bar (4") • 1/4" sockets - 8/10/12/13/14mm • 1/4" socket adapter to take screwdriver bits - one flat, one phillips no.2 This collection handles most/all of the bolts/screws on the bike. Although you'll need a 17mm socket for the oil sump plug (see below). • combi 10/12mm spanner (only seem to need one for the chain adjusters, even though you get two in the Yamaha kit - I use my original Honda one) •*8mm open/ring spanner (useful for adjusting my handguards etc) • 4/5/6/8mm allen keys • spoke key (multi size) • 3/8" sliding socket bar (short - approx 6 inch) • 3/8" 22mm socket for rear axle* • 3/8" 14mm hex bit for front axle • spark plug wrench (XR650 version is same size as the XT, and is more compact) This can also be used as an extension handle for the 3/8" socket bar. The 1/4" extension bar (above) is used as the plug spanner handle - result! I don't actually have a 17mm sump bolt socket at the moment, but this size would have to be a 3/8" drive not a 1/4", so you'd use it with the axle bar. • Leatherman multitool - not sure which version, I've had it for years and it has loads of bits you never really use. • combi screwdriver (from my Honda kit - the Yamaha one is truly shocking) • I also have a flat needle file, and a mini maglight (solitare) torch. Bodge-it spares include: Zip ties, electrical tape, a few electrical connectors and washers etc. Plus a cable repair kit, threadlock, duct tape roll (small) and the miracle putty "quick steel" which can fix all manner of things - plastic, metal etc. and sets in just 5 minutes! My tyre kit consists of: a spare tube (21") / compressed air inflator with 3 cartridges / small bottle of tyre lube / patch kit & glue / 3x tyre levers (mini Michelin style)* *Motion Pro make a combined tire lever/wheel nut wrench in the following sizes 22/24/27/32mm so you could effectively do away with the 22mm socket and steel tyre levers, and get a trio of the MP aluminium ones (very light) - especially as my Hondas have 24 and 27mm rear axles... hmmmmm... xxx |

BTW my previous bikes were Honda. I was really suprised that I do need a hex bit for the front axle. I do not have such a bit in my 3/8" or 1/4" toolbox. So I have to shop for this one. |
Many thanks for the info. I don't own any tools part from what came with the bike, so I better start shopping, and hope santa is happy with my behavior this year.

Space Blacket wedged under the seat.
Assortment of washers, nylocks, gaffa tape, cable ties and Leatherman. I need to study JMo's great list as I need to sort out all the little extras that are not in the standard tool kit. Disposable gloves, hand wipes, Steel Putty.:icon_colors: ohh and my exped solar light. |
Jmo, are we sure the front hex for the spindle is 17mm I measured it as 14mm , just wanted to be sure before buying one

(I've already changed my original post) Thanks for pointing it out... xxx |
Tool Roll - used to carry mine in a small bag which meant you had to empty it out to get at the bits you needed stuff fell out in the mud etc.
With a roll you can lie it on the ground, seat is better and get at stuff easy without it getting mucky. Strapped it to the bars with some quick release straps. |
Just thought I would refresh this thread and update you with some new toys...
I'm not sure if it is bad forum form to quote yourself?!, but to save retyping loads of stuff, as I mention in my original post below, Motion Pro do make some lovely aluminium tyre levers than double as axle wrenches... so lovely in fact that I kept going back to the shop and looking at them until I could stand it no longer... So, I have now replaced my original trio of 8 inch steel tyre levers (which did work exceptionally well I might add) with the Motion Pro combi lever/wrenches, in 27mm (XR650) 24mm (XR400) and 22mm (the Tenere). Also, the 27mm should fit various KTMs I believe, while the 24mm fits both ends of a DRZ400... so that is most bases covered. I also bought the Motion Pro 3/8th driver adapter (24mm size), so can do away with the original 3/8th bar I had (which was a bit short). As I no longer need the 22mm socket, that has gone too, and I now have a 17mm socket for the Tenere sump bolt, and which also fits the 17mm front axles of both Hondas... Result! btw. I've also dropped the o/e screwdriver (never use it) and replaced my original Leatherman with their lighter weight 'Kick' version, that has good screwdrivers but not so much other nonsense. xxx

Where did you get them from? I have tried two branches of Halfrauds and they don't sell the above items to fit a 3/8" drive! (only 1/2" drive) Barry. |

Any tool shop that sells Draper ought to have them, or be able to get them for you... xxx |

http://www.tool-mania.co.uk/14mm-hex...y-p-22850.html They were good and quick -- even if postage triples the price (doh!). The magic number for the Draper part is 22850 if you want to search around. I saw that Halfords did the 14mm hex key the other day (with Draper stamped on it) but I didn't register if it was 3/8 or 1/2. Cheers, Ian |
Thanks Jenny and Ian........ I'll get that sorted this coming weekend!
Will be off-line now for a couple of nights as we're off to Dolgoch Falls (Mid-Wales) on the bike for wife's :occasion13: (if I get a puncture in the meantime I'll call the RAC! :icon_salut:) Barry. |
Just to add a little bit, if you can find the OE tool kit from a 2000 (SY) model bandit 600, they have a 22mm ring spanner short enough to fit into a tool roll for your wheel spindle. It will slot into the end of the flat tube of your yamaha OE preload spanner extension.

Why it's not in the Ten Tool Kit who knows?? |

Below is a pic of my "bare essentials" kit that I carry for commuting and weekend trips in addition to the standard Tenere kit. It consists of the following:
The coins and note are for coin or note operated telephones and / or petrol pumps (just in case the credit card or mobile phone succumbs to Murpheys Law at a critical moment). The whole kit lives in the top box and is worth the 2.4 kg in peace of mind and space. I also have spare fuses and a head light bulb taped and sealed to the wiring loom. I figured that with the Tenere, a spare tail light bulb is a thing of the past with a multi LED tail / brake light. For a more serious tour I would add some more tools (as the ideas previously listed in the post) various spare parts, comsumables and a tow rope depending on the duration, destination and terrain to be tackled. |

Does anyone know where I can get the Motion Pro tyre levers please!?
I seem to be drawing a blank... |

I was just going to say Adventure Spec too...

I have been studying this thread with interest, as it is the first time I've come across a suggested tool kit list for the Tenere. (Loads of stuff on the net, and even off the shelf tool kits for BMW's - perhaps they break down more often ;-))
This is what I've assembled so far, from my studies, (and a complete lack of mechanical knowledge) with the aim of having everything needed for a long trip, far too much stuff just for a trip down the shops. Socket 1/4" 8,10,12,13 Socket 3/8" 14,17,22,24 Axle tool 3/8" 14mm Ratchet Spanner 8,10,12,13,14 Sliding T-Bar 3/8" Ratchet adaptor 3/8" for 13mm spanner Extension Bar 6" Adjustable Spanner 6" Adjustable Spanner 10" Mole Grips Feeler gauge Tyre pressure gauge Tyre Levers Leatherman Tool Test lamp Bit holder Fits 10mm ratchet spanner Screwdriver/bit flat 3,6mm Screwdriver/bit Phillips 1,2,3 Screwdriver/bit Pozi 1,2,3, Allen Key set 1.5,2,2.5,3,4,5,5.5,6 Allen Key 8,10 Tyre Valve tool Chain breaker xt660.com stickers :-) No spares/consumables yet on the list, maybe that would be worth starting as a seperate thread? Anything I've missed, or don't need? I must learn how to post pictures |
I spent quite some time geting my Africa Twin toolkit sorted. Mind you the standard one was great really and you could do most things with it. There were only 'quality' improvements that needed to be made. Where the Twin won was that you had somewhere to put the kit without having to fit a tailpack or panniers. This is one of my little but minor bug bears with an otherwise great bike. There is just nowhere to store any bits and bobs. Even the basic standard toolkit barely fits in the slot provided on the Tenere.
I was amazed to discover that the issued toolkit was devoid of a hex spanner for the front axle and a spanner for the rear wheel nut. Great list JMO and one I will be thinking through and working from. After all, there is no point in reinventing the wheel!:eusa_clap: |

Buzzetti
Not tried them yet, looked longingly at the motion-Pro ones before ordering these, may still get one of those later on, when I've had some practice at changing tyres and fixing punctures. http://www.adventure-spec.com/shop/t.../prod_103.html Not quite sure what you mean by raised edges - the link has photos of the lever ends, i'll take more photos/ angles if that would help |
Thanks for the reply

Head torch
I like to carry a small head torch around with me. The LED ones are small, light and last forever. It saves a complete hand when doing stuff in the dark and always aim in the same direction as your eyes. On top of that you can always take it off and use it as a normal torch.

This is the set I have came up with... Its suitable for long distance trip.
Original kit is bad quality and sometimes useless. I switched for better quality tools. I tried to make it small and light as it gets... Those are the pics... (there is only missing heatblanket foil and fuses on the pics) This is all... http://www.shrani.si/f/2b/lC/1NyoJ6f8/img3543.jpg In bigger tool box there is enough space for all the tools I need. I use socket tools as much as possible. http://www.shrani.si/f/1q/pN/l46wHIC/img3549.jpg This is very usefull tool, small, light and usefull for lots of sockets... http://www.shrani.si/f/12/mP/3YYGirDA/img3550.jpg For more leverage, you can do this... http://www.shrani.si/f/1S/LB/3DnAOlL8/img3551.jpg In smaller tool tube there is all I need in case of flat tyre + small saw, sand paper... http://www.shrani.si/f/W/74/1J3NVP1u/img3553.jpg http://www.shrani.si/f/1O/O/qOdyzE3/img3555.jpg Small bags... http://www.shrani.si/f/m/11c/4MTsn0dB/img3544.jpg Original bag on original spot... http://www.shrani.si/f/2m/rd/3xMK9XuX/img3545.jpg Another is perfectly under the seat, there is enough place for heat blanket and fuses also. http://www.shrani.si/f/38/12H/qTAf2KQ/img3546.jpg Since i use single sided exhaust (also home made) I have enough space on another side for tool tubes. http://www.shrani.si/f/6/lY/4JUZTQYu/img3557.jpg Thats it, I am ready for long distance trip. I will put in the kit also lighter stick and LED light when I find small ones. |
Very nice set-up there Ni3ous - I particularly like those thinner tool tubes - where did you get then from? (presumably the same make, just not seen them in that size before)...
Jx ps. Ni3ous' set up goes to show how a single can manufacturer is missing a trick not making a dummy can (for tools and stowage) to go on the opposite side - it's ideal! |
Tnx Jenny.
I bought small tool tube (also big one) at Agri supply: http://mower-blades.agrisupply.com/s...canister&asug= On Adventure Spec there are a little pricey, so we made a group buy from Slovenia, from Agri Supply (USA), and costed us for 25 pcs around 10€/tool box with shipping. Very happy. I think I already mentioned, but beside exhaust, there is also home/hand made tool wrap, and side pannier racks, specificly made to fit with my needs and bike. |

Very nice tool collection though! |
Here are some more, but not very good to see how its done.
Not sure if does any help, because mounting bracket is a bit hidden behind the steel plate. http://www.shrani.si/f/1P/Pp/1SLhgd0g/dsc01190.jpg http://www.shrani.si/f/2T/qo/27GwMkZw/dsc01191.jpg http://www.shrani.si/f/6/lY/4JUZTQYu/img3557.jpg This is a very simple map of how I did it. Is only a few welds on bracket holders to get it in place. Hope this helps. http://www.shrani.si/f/1X/2z/36snMjG...nting-plan.png |
Ahh I see, thank you!
