alternative topbox for Tenere

Shown are the standard Yammie box (Andrew's) and the modified Oxford one on mine, which opens up enough for a Chinese kerry-oot, loaf and 2ltrs of cola. Internal support includes a floor tile and old breadbin, it's better than the bought one.

Thats class, its like the evolution of mans topbox.

See right the old style mans topbox, its supported by the humble breadbin to keep its shape but also uses the average floor tile as well. Total carring capcity= chinese, 1 loaf of bread and 2ltrs of coke

But the all new model on the left is all metal and shinny with pointy corners and some plastic.

But dont kick it until you have tried it i use to use a 20 tail pack from oxford for 8 months along with my 25 oxford tank bag to hold all my bike stuff when i went to college. And ive still got it.

The alternative is no topbox at all! They're ugly and when fully loaded causes instability. I only have a small rear fenderbag from Touratech on my Tenere and for long trips a rollbag on the passenger pillion. This next to my alu panniers from Hepco&Becker. Greetz, Hans.

ugly?

Hans,

How can a Tenere owner throw the word 'ugly' at anything? And what does the fenderbag hold, a pack of three and a toothbrush?

I've had a variety of bikes with topboxes/bags and had no stability problems at the speeds I chose to ride at, which these days usually doesn't exceed three figures. Two examples:

Isle of Man, no passenger, 100mph over the mountain (legal there) no wobbles

Uglier

If you want ugly, throw some bar muffs into the equation.

Those Oxford bags are really handy.
I've also managed to fit an old Yamaha plastic topbox and plate on when I need to carry more. You can't see from the pic below but the boltholes for the grabrails line up nicely with the front 2 on the plate.

hand guards

Gregor,

I'm fitting handguards at some point, either Acerbis or the simpler Yamaha shield type. I've seen a few examples on the big Tenere thread on advrider. Another definite fitment at some point will be heated grips, Andrew and me both had them on our trade-in bikes (for the Teneres) and both miss them. I ride quite often to Aberdeen, leave my bike at NCP longstay at the airport (free for bikes) and go off to work for two weeks. 200 miles is a long way with cold hands.

Anyhow, back to the main point. In the Murray bike museum on IOM, now sadly closed, was an exhibit that might interest you. The prof, Harry Lundberger donated his bike, complete with topbox:

Yahoo, point taken guys! Haha, the prof's topbox is really something. But seriously, the Oxford bag looks better then the topbox from Yamaha(and probably more convenient?). Greetz, Hans.

Stop............you and 'The Professor' are giving me ideas. Actually I have already experimented bolting various containers to the back rather than fork out money for Yamaha's box.

Bar muffs are a complete pain btw but on a long Winter journey I'll put up with them.Anyway us Southern Softies don't get proper cold weather.

I'm also going to fit handguards, most likely the Touratechs when they become available and I get a decent look at them.I managed to drop the Tenere on its right side last week while out greenlaning resulting in a curly front brake lever.

gregor 23-11-08 19:21

Having had a quick look on the Touratech website their handguards look roughly the same as my old 25quid Polisports but a 3 times the price.

Like most of their products obscenely overpriced.

The Yamaha guards in the accessories catalogue look stronger and well made for the same money.

dallas 24-11-08 04:59

I got the Yamaha handguards&deflectors on mine, they're well-made and fit well, but offer hardly any wind&weather protection. That's why I'll change them for the Touratech setup, delivery beginning december. Greetz, Hans.

P.s.: the Touratech guards will fit right on, as they developed the mounting hardware especially for the Tenere. We tried other guards(Acerbis, Barkbusters and Yamaha XT/R), but they had to be customized to fit.

Back to Top Boxes...

I've been pondering what to do about a top-box, and have decided against it. I've got an old ventura rack and "rally" bag, and I think I'd rather adapt them to fit. It's got loads of space, won't look too nerdy, and most importantly I've got it sat in my shed! I'll get the brackets made before the Spring... watch this space for pics! :tongue1:

Here's a pic of the old Yamaha topbox fitted.

Not sure what bike is was intended for, the missus bagged it on our local Freecycle.

I'm alternating between this, the Oxford Tailpack and a cheapo Bumbag strapped to the grabrails for carrying puncture fixing gear around.

Also have some early Oxford panniers that hang from straps placed under the seat and cable tied to the rear subframe.

Tob boxes are ugly...but convenient. However with the Yam sidecase (yes I know they're controversial...) they are slim enough to leave on for commuting, so I've not bothered with a TB on this bike.

I too have a nice big roll top drybag that straps on the back if I need additional carry space. And the helmet sits on the Peatbog stand in an old carrier bag, and well chained down.

Top boxes can double up has a child sit :eusa_liar:

And for health and safety there was someone hidden behind holding him when he stood up.

# Tip 1: you can get more kids in, if you use compression sacks :icon_wink:
