I managed to download the workshop manual tonight so have had a quick look through the wiring diagrams. The connector behind the light does indeed look as if it is there for an optional power socket. It is shown on the diagram on section 8-1 with an in-line 5A fuse which in turn is fed from the same circuit as the side lights as correctly identified in one of the previous posts.

The 10A fused circuit supplies both sidelights (5W each), the number plate light (5W), all of the indicators (10W each), and the rear light (it is LED's so I'll estimate a loading of 1W). That will give a loading of 4.67A (based on 12v) so 5A would be the maximum load you could draw from the circuit in addition to having all those lights on before popping the 10A fuse. So connecting heated grips up to the circuit may be border line.

However, if you swapped out the indicator relay for a solid state one and fitted LED indicator bulbs then that would allow you more current to play with. You could do a similar thing with the sidelights as they are pretty useless anyway.

Heads or tails

Hi

Am going to try the one behind the screen surround as I tried the one under the seat and the Zumo kept going on and off and the indicator lamp on the dash kept flashing. Any body else had this problem.

I understand the dead-end connectors under the seat are for the diognostics and alarm - hence why you probably got error signals and/or intermittent power?

I tapped into the brake light circuit (live when ignition on) under there originally, but have since changed to running it off the sidelight curcuit behind the dash panel.

But as Coxwain says, using the dedicated two-pin terminal behind the dash would seem to be the simplist solution now it's confirmed as an auxillary circiut and not for the diognostics as originally thought?

Hi Maxwell 123455,

agh yes I did not think about the horn feed, for a GPS that will do nicely, is one of the wires live all the time when the ignition is on? I would have thought it would be a live feed from the switch so no power unless you press the button...

Will get my DVM out :-)...

I imagine the horn circuit is only going to be live when the horn button is pressed...

I'd use the connector behind the dash panel, or the side light circuit for a GPS... they are both connected to the same (10A) fuse under the seat.

Hmm, long time ago since someone used this thread.... But here we go! :)

For a couple of months ago I connected my heated grips to this connector behind the dash panel. I used an 5A fuse to it. I first called my Yamaha Dealer and he said it was OK to use that connection!

After that, for my first ride with the heated grips. I went riding some longer distance with my bike. And when I did, the YELLOW ENGINE lights turned on!! :(
It appeared that it was my Regulator that was broken (my bike is an 2008 by the way.. 10.000km)!
As I have been searching through this Forum, It seems like the 2008 Ten had some issues with the regulator and my Yamaha Dealer did change it plus the loom on warranty.
But I STILL is afraid that my connecting to this plug behind the dashboard was the grounding problem that my Regulator was burnt.

What do you guys think? Can I still use this connector to my heated grips with no worries, or should I change it?

Using this should be no problem, My Tenere has done 40K miles using this power supply for heated grips and a GPS . and I know of other high milage bikes also using this with no problem, I have been lucky with my regulator . The problem is normally the plug for the regulator .
