The thing is, I actually like the LED light, but to keep it will be hard as it's built in... hmmm. Who'll be the first to "chop" their Z? :headhack:

If I had one I would mod it straight after I ran it in.:Lollypop_2G1DR4:

I think it's better to remove everything (makes it easier to restore the bike when, or if, it's time to sell it) and mold a aluminium holder for the original LED. Together with some after market XT slip-ons it should be possible to create something nice.

Mirror stem extenders

Peatbog, sorry for the delay, the usual difficulties of getting bike and camera in the same place at the same time. While I was at it, I thought so sharing of other bits might be useful. Hopefully this Flickr thing will work.

Mirror extensions.
I had a look on the bag, there is nothing to indicate who made them. I just asked the guys at Reading motorcycle parts for something to extend the mirrors.

The bag they came in:

The extensions themselves:

I have used the short ones in this photo, they push the mirrors about 50mm up and out:

Oiltemperature gauge, RR10( www.kedo.com), installed instead of the oil dipstick. In degrees Celsius, engine runs about 80-90 degrees, highway or backroads(last sunday, 350km ride, cloudy weather, about 20 degrees Celsius outside). Greetz, Hans

Hee hee - it's funny how many people seem to want to do this - I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I'm a member of a Ducati Monster forum, and this is one of the most popular mods on that bike too - together with fitting a clear-alternatives LED rear light that has the indicators built in.

I reckon that the twin rear lights on the Tenere would be ideal for this - if you put a set of orange LEDs in each side to use as indicators... It would work best with clear lenses though.

As for mods I have planned, I actually find the standard bike almost exactly what I wanted for dual-sport travel riding (other than the clumsy rear mudguard). But I do plan to fit:

1) WR footpegs - possibly the Pivotpegz type (does anyone have pictures/info of this mod? - do they bolt straight on?)

2) KTM handguards (I use these on all my bikes, great value, deep enough for wind/rain protection and strong for plastic - just hope they fit around the brake reservoir).

3) Garmin 2610 GPS - oldie but a goodie - I plan to fit it to the bar above the instruments, leaving the bars clear for a map bag.

4) I was considering the Yamaha topbox (presumably it clips straight on to the rear rack lugs?) Does anyone have experiance of this? does it look strong enough (the mounting system I mean) for serious rough-road overland type travel use? For the meantime, I plan to use a Wolfman Alpha duffel over the rear seat/rack - keep it light x

5) I was also considering modding the side-stand cut out switch - I know some bikes (such as the DRZ400) can have problems with this when riding over rough ground - does anyone have any experience of this? Does it need bypassing?

I put handlebar risers on (from my old XTR) and the 30mm differnce was enough as well as making the bars more comfortable.

Can You post a pic of the hand guards. I would like a good weather protecting set. Also, take a look at

www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=7272

for a peek at the underside of the Yamaha box. It fits straight into the existing rack lugs without any other attachments and its a one key to open or remove the box type system (as are the panniers).

The box is high quality but a bit on the small side. I think this was intentional as if it were any bigger the panniers would not open whilst they were all on the bike. See the pics.

Hi Ray - here is a link to a picture of the handguards (it's not very big, sorry). I've found them ideal on both my XR's - good weather protection and surprisingly strong for plastic (they don't have a metal bar in them like the Acerbis Rally Pro guards). They are also around 36 from any KTM dealer, which is a bit of a bargin I reckon...

Thanks for the link to your luggage pictures - I must say, I'm glad the Yamaha boxes are plastic lined, my Touratech Top box (similar size, full face helmet but that's about it) is all aluminium, and everything goes black when it rubs against the alloy panels. I've lined it inside, but anything bungee'd to the outside also gets filthy, especially when it rains...

Mind you, looking at your pictures, the Yamaha luggage looks like it is essentially plastic boxes with a (basically cosmetic) aluminium skin? Do you think they will hold up over rough terrain use? I'm concerned there is only one catch to secure the top box to the rear of the bike, although I guess that is all you need?

I also recall someone commented on the plastic hinges (being broken) on a bike at a show earlier in the year? I wonder how long they will last with some serious use?

That said, I love the way the top box connects to the bike - I guess I need to see one in the metal (or is that plastic x)...

The boxes are quite sturdy, as you say the aluminium is mainly cosmetic but will add to the strength of the reinforced (due to ribbing) plastic box.
The fitting to the bike is as good as any and is actually very firm (as are the panniers), I cannot comment on the hinges, they seem as good as the ones on my previous top boxes and are helped by straps to stop excessive opening. I have not used them on a trip yet (except for commuting) but I like them. I am considering fitting some tie on loops all over them and they should drill/screw through without any problem. If you need any closer photos, let me know.

My Tenere, done 10.000km's so far. Mods so far:
-Yamaha alu bashplate and centre stand;
-KEDO RR10 oiltemperature gauge;
-Leovince SBK exhaust system;
-Hepco&Becker pannier rack and Alu Standard panniers;
-Touratech handguards&spoilers, small rear luggage rack, sidestand enlarger
and tailbag Enduro.

What'll come:
-TKC 80's(and extra strong innertubes);
