Help please.

I need to find a rear wheel rim clamp for my XTR.
Now i've got my TKC'S fitted,i want the option of dropping the rear pressure
when on the muddy stuff.
The biggest size i can find is for a 2.5 rear wheel, but the XTR has a 2.75 rear, and after trying the 2.5 it is way to small.
Any idears guys/gals.:102:

B.T.W.I did 200 miles on the tyres last monday,90 of them off road.
The road miles were great, even in the wet,no problems at all.
Off road (Salisbury Plains finest chalky clay) the front was fine, but with 29 psi in the rear it was not so good.
I would have liked to run it at 15-20psi (i have mich 4mm thick tubes fitted) to see if the grip was any better (jasext did say the rears were not very good in the mud),but without the clamp it was just not worth the risk.

Cheers all.....Andy C.

DK off road do a 2.85" HERE

Tomsdad 09-05-08 23:23

Thanks for the info Motonacio.
I will call them 1st thing in the morning.
This forum is great....somebody always has an answer.

Cheers Andy C.

motonacio 14-05-08 08:06

Were they suitable? - I might need some soon.

Tomsdad 14-05-08 11:46

Hi Motonacio.
The rim clamp should be with me by the weekend (only doing the rear as the balance on the front would be a problem).
I will post up some pictures of the fitting next week.
Thanks again for the info.

Just called D.K off road to chase up my order to be told that they can't supply it.:sad3:
Will keep looking.

Andy..did you find a rim-lock that fitted off-the-shelf, for your XTR ? With a possible 70hp at the rear wheel when my engine is finished, I am a little concerned at ripping the inner tube when running a lower tyre pressure.

I see that Offtheroad sell them, but they look like Motion Pro ones...which only go up to 2.5 ?????

Also, (excuse the "off thread",) when we went to Salisbury, I found that the footbrake lever was too high when standing up. I have lowered it as much as possible at the brake cylinder...but ideally I would like it a little lower still when wearing my bovver-boots. (I have just bought some Pivot Pegs that rotate 20 degrees as well, so when I am "Pivot-Pegging-forwards" I am on the brake.).

I could just remove one of the nuts on the adjustment, but I am not sure if that would be enough, I will try it though. A shorter clevis attachment should do it.

Any ideas Andy? Are there any after-market folding levers that are lower/adjustable? or ones off another bike? Did you have this problem?

It's worth having a crack at losing that second nut. It'll give you a fair few degrees of movement. Did the same on an old XR and substituted the last nut for a locking nut.

If that fails a couple of cuts and a weld would be a pretty simple fix for the lever.

Off topic again, which bash plate is that. In the market for one and that looks sweet!

richardsracingmad 30-01-11 09:26

The bashplate is a Touratech EXTRA LARGE ! 160 NEW!!!! LARGE PRICE EH?

.....luckily I found it second-hand.

Pleiades 30-01-11 10:01

Cut the two nuts in half carefully, which means you lose the width of a nut, but keep the locking feature (what I've done). Or just buy two nuts half the thickness!

jasext 30-01-11 14:14

I used a 2.5 rim lock in my xtr and it worked fine ,went to some quite difficult places as well as a few rallies ,never had the tyre spin ,i was running 20-22 psi in the front and rear and using Michelin AC10's ,would find a different front as it did'nt feel good in the mud and wet grass

richardsracingmad 30-01-11 14:17

thanks Jason....as Tomsdad said re tyres..more aggressive front!

Thanks for the heads-up on the rimlock...I may fit more than one, to balance the wheel better as well.

jasext 30-01-11 19:05

No worries . Some people say there is no need for one in the front BUT i have used these bikes and done proper offroading ,due to the weight of the bike even at slow speed braking the front tyre does creep around the rim .
Tyre wise i now use a Mitas CO2 rear and a C19 front ,they are very aggressive and not much good if your doing mostly road work ,i have had 2000 miles on them on my ktm 400 and they still have half life left .

Few guys i know on the 990 ktm's either use a heindau or something like that , dunlop 908rr , Michelin desert ,Metzeler Karoo to name a few others

richardsracingmad 30-01-11 19:14

ok Jason..thank you for your advice, which I am grateful for...

Do you ever run below 20-22psi? i.e. 15?

jasext 30-01-11 20:39

I do know and again on the smaller bikes when it is very wet and muddy ,but there are so many different surfaces around here that i ride i used to get pinch punctures ,I have now gone back to running 18psi and not had a puncture in the lst 2 years (touch wood) .

I have seen some people use the Tubliss system in some big bikes but i would'nt want to try it to be honest

When i had the 690 first of all i went for a spin over the range's near me ,the tyres are very well worn Karoo's ,the only problems i had was on the slippery grass ,i have found with the big bikes it's momentum you need to get anywhere on the trails unless it's really tricky or uphill boggs .

When you do fancy a bit of proper offroading your more than welcome down here anytime and i will show you some really nice scenic trails ,all easy enough as i have done them on the R and the Tenere without problems

richardsracingmad 30-01-11 20:53

I will take you up on that...I go to Usk once a month, and could do a little detour! Will let you know when I'm ready and running........thank you.

Many years ago I used to do Trials, where we ran only a few psi, but that was slow stuff. I have little greenlaning experience.

jasext 30-01-11 21:40

Not far from usk ,i am very close to touratech in Ystradgynlais .

Few guys who do the events run 10-12 psi but they are on much smaller bikes like 250 - 450 enduro bikes that weigh half the weight of an xt

Hopefully see you soon

richardsracingmad 01-02-11 08:45

I've had a look at those Mitas tyres....they look good, and a good price too Jasext.

I like the Pirelli MT21's the best so far for me.

Erm yeah, I run about 12-14psi in the enduro bikes, but then my old DR-Z with me on it was about the same weight as the Tenere on it's own. The GasGas I've replaced it with is probably another 20kg lighter. Don't think I'll be trying that on the Tenere.

Tomsdad 01-02-11 12:46

Hi Rich.

I never bothered with the rim locks on my 660R in the end,I just ran the MT21's at 25psi front and rear.

I never fitted the valve nut as I used a rubber boot that goes over the valve stem and stops the mud/water from getting in.My thinking was that if the tyres did move on the rim then all it would do was to pull the valve in to the wheel, not ripping it out,so at least I could get home with out having to change a tube.

Ref the rear brake pedal...I took off the pair of nuts and fitted a single locking nut and then I adjusted the pedal to suit standing rather then sitting.
Mind you, with pivot pegs you might get a setting for both road and off road.

On thing to look out for if you run low pressures is wheel rim damage. These are heavy old bikes, the softer the pressure means more chance of a nice ding in the rim.Never had a problem with 25psi on my R or the Z.

Cheers,
Andy.
