07 XTX First Service

Just dropped the bike off to have its first 600 mile/6 week service and the dealership owner who I booked it in with said did I want either semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil putting in during the service.

I asked what Yamaha recommend and he showed me a pre printed off Yamahlube chart that showed a tick for the XT to have either. I asked the price difference which was 10 but someting in my head said use semi synthetic so I opted for that.

I dont think it will make any noticable difference overall but worth the mention. I also pointed out the corrosion I was suffering from and that is getting sorted under warranty and I also pointed out it has a slight top end rattle which I am sure should not be there so they are sorting/looking at that as well. I am just waiting for the call before I collect and will let you know how I got on.

Once I get it back I can steadily get it maxed out on the revs, I have been reasonably carefull up to now as I want the motor to last.

Tony,

Would be very interested to know what they do as regards the corrosion problem you have reported as I'm not happy with a few parts on mine where corrosion has started.

Nick.

Right then got back from picking up the bike and I am please with the service I received and all my issues are being sorted. I have to say Tamworth Yamaha are spot on.

They inspected the corrosion and were sure it was caused by salt from the roads, as you know I am a bit of a cleaning freak so I am sure its poor finish, they did advise just like Meach did that when I wash the bike use good cleaner which I do and to wd40 the bits that are vulnerable. I will start to do (wd40) this as I dont want a repeat performance. They are swapping all the parts under warranty no problems and will give me a call when the parts arrive to fit.

All in my first 600 mile service cost 37.43, I have gone through the check list and they have done the normal things. The top end rattle has gone as well but I dont know what they did to cure it but I am not to fussed as it has gone and now runs smooth again after chains adjustment and lube.

I asked about the first 6000 mile or 1 year service costs and they said that all in with parts and labour it will be 137. I am not sure what I get for that but I have to say I am not to unhappy with that price especially as I have to get it done officially to ensure my warranty is valid. I guess I wont do more than 3000 miles in the year so I have to say another great reason to have an XT.

Forgot to say I am interested to know what other UK XT owners paid for their first 600 mile and 1 year service and with whom as it would be interesting to compare costs. Particularly interested in those people local to the midlands.

meach 22-03-08 19:49

Thats a good price for the 6000mile, the service i had before Christmas was about 180

My 1st service cost 49 quid but they did fit a new tube in that price! The tube should have been 45 quid but long story never mind that!
I think the 6000 service was about 130.

NickW909 22-03-08 20:40

Tony,

1st service cost 25.97 at Dudley Motorcycle Centre.

Did you get a list of what parts they are replacing under warranty?

Nick.

No, I know for sure they are replacing the water pump outlet housing, oil line pipe going from the cylinder head to crank case, banjo bolts and chrome lever just above the clutch where the clutch cable connects to. They did say they were doing some other items but I did not ask about them as there was not really anything else I was concerned over just the bits I have mentioned. When I get the work done I will ask then exactly what was completed.

What areas do you have issues over?

The oil pipe is corroding on mine too, appears to be where the clutch (I think?) cable is rubbing against it. Also a few nuts and bolts hear and there, might pop into the dealers next week and see what they say??

Im going to keep an eye on this subject as my bike is about the same mileage as Tony,s I have sprayed Scottoil FS365 ON after cleaning and I did not see any corrosion when I looked earlyer today!

Tony660x 23-03-08 20:08

Gents whilst its under warranty get everything you need done, thats what you bought a new bike for so you can enjoy the riding and let someone else do the main maintenance. Or at least that was why I did, and to ensure the bike I got had not been messed about with. I was lucky with my first XT is was totally standard.

I washed the bike today and did as the dealer said and sprayed maintenance spray on it, it does not look as good but if it helps then I will use it.

Some of the prices we were all charged for our first services are varying wildly especially Shaynes as his was done at the same place just a few months later.

Worth noting.

first service

my bike went in for it`s first service today cost me all of 24.16, at jt`s motorcycles swansea, well impressed

Fast Fattie 28-05-08 16:33

Finally got my 600 miles done, and had the service today. Was done at dealer it came from, The Bike Shop, Faversham. Costs as below.

Oil Filter............................................ ......................5.10
Mobil Super Oil 10w 40.............................................14 .17
Sundries (whatever that was, never bothered to ask)..... 1.50
20.77, +VAT....Grand total 24.40.

I was more than happy with that. Seemed pretty reasonable to me. They even offered me another bike while it was being done, but I never bothered as it was raining, and I am no fan of riding in the rain at the best of times.

Seems like you have a good dealer there both in terms of prices and the fact he offered the loan bike. Its good to hear.

LOL, Now I am using my bike daily due to not having a car anymore I am starting to see your way of thinking mate! I just really enjoy cleaning and in the crappy UK weather a nice clean bike does not last.

johnno 29-05-08 16:57

first service and warrety parts

:moon:My first service was at Bill Smiths motorcycles in Chester. The story is that the service cost 38.00 but because they only put 6 months tax on the bike instead of the promised 12 months, they called it quits. The only other problem I had was when I picked the bike up the clocks wer'nt working properly, couldnot get the speedo to read mph, stuck in kph. they agreed to do the work under warranty but it took yamaha 6 weeks to send a replacement. Is this the usual sort of lead time for warranty replacement bits ? or was this an exception. comments greatfully accepted.

bjerrang 04-09-08 10:20

1st service is not included in norway.

I just called in and they wanted 250 for it. ( www.biltrend.no)
Then i asked why.
The oil to the engine and gearbox and filter is 150....

What is replaced during the 1st service?

bridportblue 01-02-09 23:31

first 600 mile service

My dealer George White told me on delivery of my bike not to worry about my 6 week service and do it after 600 miles instead. Do you guys believe this will not affect my warranty as i got my bike in october 2008 and have only managed 130 miles as yet? Cheers

PS.i'm in dorset and the dealer i bought from is in swindon 115 miles away!!:eusa_shifty:

CaptMoto 01-02-09 23:45

That Is Crazy

You must have the first service! It is very important, the new engine parts will shed tiny metal particles that are produced by the friction of these parts bedding in, all these parts end up in the oil filter, hence it is vital that the oil and oil filter are changed to prevent these parts causing damage and clogging up the filter. The guy who told you that must be an unexperienced muppet and should be shot, or sent back to chav-city. Book your service tomorrow morning mate. Listen to us.

Cheers

My 6000mile service is due now/soon.
But my bike is 2 years old in 2 months. So only 2 months left on warranty.
I'm thinking I'll do the service myself? But I'm due to tour 1000 or more miles begining of June.
What do you think? Should I pay for the real deal?, 160 here in Nottingham.
I've already packed out the cushdrive, changed brake pads, got DNA filters swapped casing bolts for nice shiny ones and replaced chain + sprokets. so there's not much left to do.
I'm convinced the engine/bike is sound and won't fall apart just yet (I rattle more than the bike does)

?

shards 19-05-10 20:48

My personal feeling is that taking any bike to any dealer for any service is more risky than "flagging away" the warranty by doing it yourself. I'm sure some will disagree.
