Enduro Tyres
Here you are some of the best tire makers and links to their sites for those who want to see them:
Metzeler : Tourance Enduro 3 Sahara Pirelli : Scorpion Michelin : Sirac Anakee Continental : TKC 80 ContiEscape Bridgestone : Trail Wing 42 (rear) Trail Wing 41 (front) |
cheers for that, think i will go for some conti TKC80s at the moment for my off roading
|
I have the tkc80's. I don't know what you have read about them but from my experience they are pretty good.
The contis have bags more traction offroad than the OEM Saharas my bike came with. I can wheelie in the dirt (sometimes) and they grip the road quite well in both wet or dry. (They seemed to have more grip than my old Saharas under heavy rear brake) They are not really meant for high speed and they have been known to develop a weave above leagal speeds. You can reduce this by adding one notch of preload to your rear shock. When travelling two up I have not noticed any weave, but I have had the front wheel let go a couple of times, but only on very tight corners and at silly lean angles (and low speeds, thankfully for my underwear). The other thing that can be unnerving is they turn into corners quite fast. I have heard it explained as the "Edge of the cliff feeling". You will know what I am talking about when you get them fitted. Don't worry about it. You get used to it (I find it exciting). The rears wear faster than most but that is the price you pay for grippy nobbys. Enjoy! |

i have got the TKC80 on my Tenere. Good traction off the road as long as the mud is not too deep or too sticky. They don't seem to clean themselfs very well.
On the road i am not too shure about them. Specially in the wet. Strangely the front seems to be holding better than the rear. Needs warming up to be at its best. Does not like low air pressure, rather a notch too high. Does tend to fall into corners. Surprises you at first but trust it. Good tyre. Rob |
Just ridden a long way on TKC80s. Found them to offer good grip on dry offroad and tarmac. Good up to about 90 mph even if bike loaded heavily. Mine are about 70% worn after 5000 miles.

Tyres
I've run TKC 80s on my Super Tenere for a couple of winters and got about 4500 miles out of rear. So when the OEM Metzeler rear wore out on my XT660R in about 4000 miles (along with TWO punctures!) eventualy stuck with what I know and put as set of TKCs on. I havn't done much off-road with them but on road find they inspire far more confidence, more so in very poor road condition (mud, lose gravel, ice etc.). If they do break traction they recover grip in a very predictable way.

TKC80 ok
MT21 better What tyre sizes are you guys using? I have a new Tenere on order, with a 17" rear rim, is that same for the other XT bikes? Timpo. |
yea it is indeed. The full size is a
130/80 17 Ive just got myself a set of the TKC80s and they do look very good, hopefully gonna get them fitted this weekend and take an hour or so on sat morn up to some fun, if you know what i mean. |
just got a Sirac (rear) for my XTR like it better than the oem Tourance!
|
I had one of those for the front (sirac) and think i will go for another one when the metz tourance i have one at the moment wears out. It stuck to the ground really well, and was great in all weathers, the metz tourance is just a bit fiffy in the wet, and doesnt give 100% feed back.
Does anyone know what the rear Sirac is like? Never used one but thinking of getting one if i can after my pirelli i have on at the moment wears out. |
Enduro Tyres
I use the Maxxis M6006 on the rear and have used one on the front ,but it wasnt too good.
Then I tried a Dunlop 606 in the front , which worked well Now I have a Michilin Desert on the front which is the best tyre I have had on the front. I am trying to get a Michimin Baja for the rear now, but here in South Africa, they cater mor for the KTM`s that have 18" rear tyres. Michilin Desert front http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p131/hunday/3.jpg Dunlop M606 http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...nlop-D606c.jpg What is the Maxxis M6001 Like ? |
Maxxis M6006 on the back and Conti TKC in front, works perfect for me...sticks to tar, grip on dirt, floats like butterfly in sand, and stings like bee in mud....
|
Off Road Tyres
Ah ! No more Maxxis M6006`s around , so I put on a Metzler Karoo 140 / 80 / 17 , its taller
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...tzlerKaroo.jpg , so it messed up my gearing a bit .But it throws big rocks and is awsome on the dirt. I am not very impressed with it on the tar. When I braked hard , the tyre slides too easily , with the Maxxis it screached and gripped better. But I dont mind , cause I`m more on the dirt than the tar. My next tyre is a Michalin T63 130/80/17. http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...chelin_t63.jpg The Michalin desert 140/80/17 is still not available in South Africa.Bummber ! http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...alindesert.gif That Desert rear tyre and the T63 look very similar , perhaps the desert is a different compound? |
Maxxis still available. I have just ordered 2 for myself through Offroad Cycles in Pta. Stock is on way, should be here in next week. 18" is very popular with my KTM super enduro friends, but with those bikes they dont last long, 2000 or 3000km if your lucky.
Must say i am really impressed with it. Have done nearly 7000km with it, dirt and tarmac, and it can probably last for another 500-1000km if i look after it. Good for "offroad " tyre that does not take the wind out of your wallet. R500 GB:eusa_clap::eusa_clap: |
Hi guys
was desperate to get rid of the original Tourance. Great tyre on dry, warm road but a pain when its a bit wet and useless when its wet and cold. For two years now on Mitas E-07 on my 600Tenere and will never use anything else again. So I thought to try them on the XTR and see how they cope with the extra punch fron the engine. And what can I say? Nearly faultless. You know you are on kobbly tyres at low speed, just as with the TKC80, but push on and you think you are on a road tyre. Excellent in the wet, very predictable. And off road its far better than the OEM tyres but not as good as TKC80. Brilliant compromise! By the way, my TKC front tyre wore the centre blocks very quikly to a pointy tooth shape. This resulted in an unround shape when viewed side on as the points were sticking up over the other blocks. No problem at speed but rumbly and bumpy when slowing down especially through town traffic. So you guys on TKCs, it will not be the bearings or the brakes in your front its the tyres. Rob |

Have you tried the D606 rear? |
Having just done a 800km tour through the Altas Mountains in Morocco, I gained a lot of experience about the Tourance tyres. Great grip on dry road, surprisingly good grip on wet tarmac, very nervous on gravel, and hopeless in mud...
I also ended up rolling in on the last 10km, as I had had 3 punctures, and the quickfix spray cans had given up on me. The repair had worked very well the first 2 times, but on the third time the foam clogged up the valve completly and it would lose air rather quickly. Does anyone know how many times you can generally fix a (tube-type) tire with these cans? At some point the tube must have more foam than air in it... I'll change the tube of course, and have also ordered decent knobbly tires for the upcoming muddy winter season. Let's see how that changes the riding experience. Cheers Tim |
there is a nice and cheaper copy of T-63
http://www.mitas.cz/index.php?strank...&thread=&size= i've heard the mileage is even better on czech tyres .bigwink |
now, that i have a supermoto wheels, i will put the R wheels the mitas E-09.
than i will post my experience's. :) |
Great thread Hod,
Enduro sahara 3's available in Istanbul for our trip next year. Cheers |
Mt 21s for me all the way Had them on my last XTR and then put them on the 800GS even with the GS,s power they were great both onroad and off in mud or whatever
TKC80s for me are dross, they look nice but are useless in mud took them off my last XTR and fitted the MT21s never looked back just ordered a set for the new XTR cant wair to fit them |
Re Maxxis
I have used maxxis for years on the mountain bike and that give bags of confidence on the loose stuff and seem to grip to anything. I know motorbikes are a bit different but I too fancy trying something a bit different to the Metzlers. Looking on a Maxxis website link found an awsome PDF advising to use C6006 dual sport trail on the rear and M7313 MaxxEnduro on the front.
Both nice looking tyres and I am vein after all so gonna give them a shot before the worst of winter comes for commuting in the snow and having off road giggles:slywink: |
