Rev counter (tachometer) for the XT660R

Hi folks!

I'm trying to find aftermarket rev counter (tachometer) for the XT660R but I couldn't. It's a shame that a bike doesn't come with one from the factory !!!

Besides, I'm looking for a engine guard (the one that goes UNDER the engine to prevent damages to the exhaust pipes).

Any tips?

Thanks

Not specificaly for the XT,people who have fitted a tacho have done so by adapting units for other applications. These units from SPA can be made to fit the bike,i have also heard of a tacho unit for small boats made by an american company that will also be suitable for motorcycles, but the name escapes me !

What about fitting a revcounter from MT-03?

Maybe possible to combine the xt660 wiring with that?

What about something like this? I know its not a proper tacho, but it might give you some indication of where you are in the rev range?

That datatool thingy looks like it would be a fine tacho subsitute, I'm quite tempted to get one.

You can pick them out for about 70, i'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to make a DIY one. :066:

I'll have to do a bit of research to work out what would be required to make a DIY LED tacho. Can anyone point me in the direction of any sites that might explain how it works and what components are necessary?

This site has some basic info. the guy never finished it by the looks of things though.

If you are a handyman you could make up this one.

3 things im missing I cant see without diag. mode:
Revs
Coolant temp
Voltage

so I ordered this yesterday:
http://www.holeshot-diffusion.fr/bou...BA023W00_1.jpg
http://kosoeurope.com/shop/product_i...ahlmesser.html

It does all those 3 things nicely, plus it can display A/F ratio (not sure if it works with XT, but this i dont need anyway) and i think, oil temp also.
Will post the pics here when mounted, it should arrive within 2 weeks.

Its not cheap, but its the only one I found that does exactly what I need it to do.

Can a Tenere Rev Counter be used on a R

Quote:

Rev counter / Larger Tanks - I see plenty of posts regarding these two interesting challenges with various degrees of success. However seeing the Tenere may finally be making it back onto the market here in Australia I wonder whether either these two standard Z items could be fitted to the R.
The quote above was cross-posted from my newbie hello post and in essence it says it all.

I would imagine that the Tenere unit would be quite expensive and would obviously require a custom bracket to install BUT in terms of compatibilty and functionality it could a great solution.

I use one of the digital tachos that the go kart racers use - a small rectangular box with one wire with a clamp that goes onto the plug lead - works really well, small, waterproof and it fits above the speedo with some velcro strip.
About $50 (AUD) if you look around.

Speedway instruments make digital tacho's for v twins, they may do a single cylinder version

Jaycar Digital Tachometer Display Kit

After looking at various tacho options for the XTR I went out and brought the Jaycar Digital Tacho Kit. Put it together over the weekend and tested it's basic operation this evening - obviously my old electronics skills haven't yet disappeared and it worked fine. Honestly it's not really a difficult job as long as you can follow instructions, can read small writing on components and aren't colour blind - oh and you can solder sucessfully as well :icon_rolleyes::icon_rolleyes:

The red LED display seems large and clear which together with the auto-dim feature and the 7 section green bar-graph display (complete with 3 section red-line feature) should make this a fairly satisfactory add-on. While the display can be programmed I've left it standard other than setting the configuration to single cylinder 4-stroke and the red line to 7,500 - this means the first green bar-graph segment covers 1,200 revs with the remaining six at 900 revs.

The box is a little on the large size but I think that I should be able to squeeze it down into the cavity formed between the current multi-function display unit and the windscreen. One issue however is that the jiffy box housing isn't waterproof so I'll have to add an additional thin clear perspex cover over the top-plate and seal the edges with a suitable sealing compound.

I've looked at the wiring diagram and although it looks like I should be able to simply tap into the loom for power supply and ground - however I was relatively suprised to find that although the multi-function unit can display rpm in diagnotic mode there is no direct tacho feed from the ECU (unlike the Tenere). So it seems that I either have two options either tap into the ECU / coil connection (orange) or find the relevant ECU tacho feed.

Any comment from anyone who's already done this would be appreciated.

I'll post photo's when I've managed to find the time to finish the installation.

xtrlee 19-08-09 15:30

I installed a tacho, audicator (see audicator.com) and the gear position indicator.

Anyone know of a source of elbow hydraulic fittings so that I can move the front brake line out of the line of view, parallel and closer to the renthal cross bar.
