You will find here a list of the most popular tyres all you have to do is vote for your favourite ones, you can vote as many as you like. Please also tell us what you were looking in a tyre and why you made that choice. Thanks |
Right i will keep this brief as my computer just deleted my post for this 2 secs ago. Beggar.
I have the Metzler Tourance on at the moment and had the bike for 2.5 weeks and around 900miles and find them great. The front is half worn and is still gripping, only had one slide on it but was due to massive diesal spill mid corner (any tyres would have slide). The rear is only about 1000miles scrubbed in and is still gripping fine. I have tryed to get the chicken wings off just cant/dont wanna lean the bike over any more or either my toes will get grinded off, my leg will not lift high enough or i might fall off. Only had one slide on the rear so far but i was pushing it hard to see what the bike had. Would i buy them again. Yea but i might try something more road basis next time as at the moment i dont plan on doing much off roading. |
Yust a remark: my original tyres are mez tourance.
|
Yes in few countries outside UK the XTR's come with Tourance, which in my view are the best option for these bikes, so you can count yourself lucky, at the end of the day Yamaha UK probably find it cheaper to fit the other tyres rather than the Tourances.

yeah i got the tourances... originally bought the bike with some crappy dunlops. With tourances i regenerated and my vote is definetly on them..great on road and on wet as well on so called white roads... mud isn't right environment for them :tongue[1]:

well i only compare these with my old dunlops.... white road would be gravel road not like acropolis rally road but little lighter gravel and i would say front tyre is fair enough on wet and greasy rear depends on throttle position |
ah get you now boss. Yea the tourances are good enough on white roads. The only thing that i can compare my tourance tyres 2 at the moment are my dads varadero which have the scorpions on or my old Deauville which had road basis tyres on which are good in the wet. So the tourance are probably good in the wet as there are a cross between off road and on road therefore less rubber on the ground.

I have distanzas on at the moment and I know a few people have got them I had them on ma X.. and a liked them a lot. so no reason why a dont put them on ma R so they are now... an they feel awesome... an priced reasonable compared to moto Distanzas....

Just fitted Pirelli Scorpion ST 90 Tyres

These are the street biased version and have high silica content.
So far I have done 800 miles on them and they are superbly grippy in the dry and much better than my Siracs in the wet. They felt a bit odd, like they were following their own tracks for the first couple of hundred miles but now I reckon they are perfect for an on road rider like me. :-) Any tips on pressure, I weigh 86 kg and tend to ride fast and solo, the manuf settings are 2 bar front 2.25 bar rear which I think is about (29/33) psi, the rear sounds a bit high to me unless I was carrying a pillion. |
For serious off road ridding i recommend after +3 years of using several brands: front: Metzeler unicross, gives me a lot of confidence, great grip. Rear: Michelin T66, similar to Karoo2 but lasts longer.

After 4 years and 40000km on my XT660R,Michelin T63 is my favourite tyre for dual use.On tarmac is almost perfect even dry or wet with only two disadvantages...Noise and medium life span(about 8000-9000km).Perfect tyre for this bike but only on 22-24 psi pressure!

Mefo MFC12 stonemaster rear + MFC15 front.

T63 all the way
43,000kms to New Zealand, and I say Michelin T63. Lasted AGES even when riding on tarmac. Got to northern India before the front needed changing - about 18,000 kms! Good traction off road too. They're VERY comparable to Mitas Enduro tyres, which are dead cheap, but almost same pattern, and great wear rate and grip on tarmac. When I got to NZ, I put Distanzias on since it was 90% tarmac. These are great tyres too.

Best XTR tyres for off-road ?
What you think could be the best tyres for only off-road ride on the XTR ?
I used Metzeler MC5 in my old trail bike. Thanks |

Hi, I can't remember what I paid when i got the pair last year but I just replaced the rear after 8000 miles and that cost 65 Fitted.
Cheers |
Avon all the way
I only use the bike on road at the moment, not planning on venturing on to the muddy stuff, apart from the gravel/cow **** lane to my sisters farm. I've got the Avon Distanzias on mine, and I have to say they are mint!

Ive just changed my Avon Distanzia tyres over to a set of Metz tourances.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-8ywrZ4Re8..._distanzia.jpg The front lasted about 10kmiles and the rear about 4-5kmiles (but i did have a large 2.5kmile fully loaded touring trip so milage would have been bigger with normal use). They do warm up very quickly and never really had any problems with grips. Only downside mine squared off badly at the end of us and made wet cornering a bit fiffy, with some rear end moments. But still a good tyre. Would i buy them again, yea probably would, would like to also try them off road as they look as if the rear could do a good job of gripping. Got a set of metz tourances on for 120, then + 10 for 2 new tubs as the old ones had slime in the tyre and you cant balance a tyre with slime in it i was told. Didnt think that price was too bad |
Had the Michelin Siracs on mine when I got it. but got uncomfortably close to the edges in first few days, (they were part worn) so, to stop me worrying I put two new Anakee2's on. Great on the tarmac. Feel very secure in the wet too. Not ventured off road yet. Recommended for road use though.
Incidentally, The original Siracs, which I believe to be excellent and would definitely fit again... are the only tyres I've ever had on any bike where I've used 100% of the front tyre (no chicken strips at all on the front) is this normal with 21" front's on the road? I've used nearly 100% of the Anakees but feel more secure when cranked right over (prob just in the head) |Rob |
My bike came with Metzler Tourance front and rear and having a sports bike as well I was well impressed on tarmac they even held up better than expected on wet gravel roads. For more off road riding I switched to Michelin T63's front and rear they are holding up well. We were riding on surfaces from Tarmac to wet clay tracks and for a road legal knobbly tire I cant say enough about them. What surprised me was how well they held up on a sealed surface I was able to crank the bike over far enough to scrape my boots :025:

12 months late..but anyway..
These are my top road/dirt tyre for the bigger bikes.. 1st.....Shinko 705. 2nd.....Kenda 761 "very good prise" both these tyre have good size grooves for foward drive & side bite on the dirt.. but still have a good amount of rubber on the ground for good grip on the seal.. "small bikes Dunlop 605" |
In my experience Tourance's didn't last as long as the hype suggested but were great on road and ok on gravel when they lasted.
Pirelli MT21's are a great DOT nobbly but the T63's last longer. Hiedenau K60's out last Tourance's and are better on gravel,as good on dry roads but not so in the wet. A T63 Rear and MT21 front is what we like the most as the MT21 front is nicer on the road than the T63 front and the T63 rear out lasts the MT21 rear. After all that , my vote goes to either the T63 or MT21 - depending which one is cheapest at the time. Our Hiedenau's have only done 3000 miles on road so far but we have 1000 miles of mixed gravel/dirt and tar roads to do in the South Island NZ this week, I'll re-post my findings - not looking forward to mud though. TKC 80s all the way for me i'm afraid. Awesome offroad and plenty of feel when cornering on the road quickly.
