Choke on 1st and 2nd gear

Hey all

My bike started to run badly around a week ago. Engine would shut off when leaving a stop light and there was a noticeable choke on second gear change (not enough to kill the engine). I didnt change anything in the last months (same gas, same settings, etc).

What I tried so far:

- clean the filters (stage1+2)
- change gas supplier, and tried both 95 and 99
- lower kevmod from 6 to 4 and 2
- made sure idle is at 1500

Setting it to 2 seems to have made the issues less obvious, still chokes on 2nd but just a bit, engine dies but less often.

I've also taken the sparkplug out today, I might need to change it, but it doesnt seem that bad. How does it look: https://i.imgur.com/iLQioGT.png

White residuu might be from running yesterday for an hour on setting 2 on kevmod, before that it has always ran on 6 and it was ok.

Im not entirely sure but it seems these issues started to arise with temps going up (30C now, it was 20 a week or so ago).

I also feel the gearbox a little funny. Sometimes it gets stuck in neutral and Ive found no solution other than to mash the lever harder. Changing gears also feels a bit weird, might be feeling a little drag or extra frictions, dont know how to describe it.

Any idea on what to look for?

Thank you

I've set kevmod back to 6-ish this morning. Feels a bit better but still has issues.

Here's what it sounds like when it chokes and dies

Got a new sparkplug on its way. Also checked the rubber thing connecting to the engine besides the TPS (cant remember what its called), its fine no cracks or anything.

Edit2: Just noticed my TPS is at 19 on fully closed. Gonna try and set it to 15-18 and see if it helps

is it a fulling issue?..try putting a strong mix of injector cleaner through..like Redex etc.

cozonac 29-05-19 14:45

Was thinking about that too. How much is too much injector cleaner?

nikroc 29-05-19 15:38

I use a half bottle to perhaps a gallon of fuel..never really measured it out tbh.
Whatever you use will have its own directions etc...

I've set the TPS to 16 and it runs a lot better. Maybe got one or two semi chokes, but still better than yesterday when it stopped a few times.

I've also noticed it started to backfire again, but only when the engine was cold. When it get hot it stops backfiring (and before changing the tps it would backfire very rarely).

Gonna try the injector cleaner tomorrow, any idea on the lack of backfire?

I have no idea what your doing to your settings..seem to be setting and re setting them again and again.
No disrespect meant..I feel your frustration.

I would consider setting everything back to standard..new plug, clean filters, and maybe spray some carb cleaner around the airbox area.New fuel/injector cleaner and see if resetting everything to standard gets a positively different result.

I've set the TPS to 16. Kevmod back to 6 as it always was. Put a new sparkplug in.

It runs better, doesnt die on first anymore. Got a bit of a semi-choke just once. Gearbox feels normal and doesnt hang in neutral tho im not sure why it is (or seems to be) fixed. Overall theres an improvement.

I still dont have backfire unless I run it on red.

Update on this

New sparkplug, clean filters, clean fuel, adjusted valves, whole package.

Bike chokes (rarely now) when I pull the clutch, doesnt matter if I change the gear or not. It was probably like this before but the engine was running worse with the old parts. Backfire is back and engine runs smooth.

Any idea what could cause this choking when pulling the clutch? Clutch springs were changed last year, clutch cable changed two months ago, bike has 70k km.

Is the clutch dragging at all?...Maybe try adjusting it....
