Turbulence, possible solution.
Stats:
Me; 6'3". Bike 2010 XT660Z, standard OEM seat, standard screen, Arai XD4 helmet, bar risers, Wolfman Blackhawk tank bag (most of the time). Problem; buffeting, turbulence, helmet peak vibrating at speeds over about 45mph. I noticed that when I stood up on the pegs at speed, everything got much quieter, and my helmet peak stopped vibrating. I removed my screen altogether and the buffeting is much reduced. I can actually feel the vents in the helmet flowing air, and doing their job. It's still a little noisy, but much more comfortable. Without the screen though my GPS is left quite vulnerable. Does anyone make a low screen option for an XT660Z? If not, what's the best way to approach cutting down the original screen with minimal chance of wrecking it. Cheers, Rich. |
I dont know how to upload pics but i made the chalk two mod......its a picece of perspex that goes underneath the bottom yoke ....worked wonders for me and cut it down at least 80%

I cut my screen down. ..I experimented with different screen heights but like you I always found that standing up the buffeting stopped. ..hence my decision to cut the screen down. I decided on an amount of screen to remove. ...measured and marked it carefully. I then put masking tape below the cut line and used a brand new hacksaw blade to cut the screen. ..it was very straightforward. I used a file and some fine wet and dry to round off and smooth the cut edge. It works for me! Steve

As the guys have mentioned, there are some other, cheaper, solutions but you can buy a mini-screen..If you want to shorten by cutting your own down, I'd be tempted to remove the screen screws and gaffa-tape it back on and lower it, incrementally, until you find your optimum height and then do the maths and cut accordingly.

I agree ....that's what I did. .. (I should have mentioned that! ). I kept raising and lowering it securing it with gaff tape till I found the optimum height for me. Steve

Thanks for the input everyone.
Yesterday I ordered a high Kahedo seat, so I'll see how that affects the situation before breaking out the cutting tools. Thanks again, Rich. |
