Handle bar

What is the purpose / value of this bar on the handle bar?
A bit in the way for my setup of handle bar
Can I take it off or not advisable

It's to brace the bars in the even of a fall. In theory it offers resistance to the bending and leverage forces applied at the end of the bar, since the bars are quite wide.
