Rust.

Anybody had any issues with the frane rusting on their Tenere??
On my eay down too the Touratech travel event. I noticed oil on the downtube between the headers. Got there and whipped the tank off and found serious corrosion all around the oil tank and its actually leaking through part of the corrosion.
Cleaned it with fuel and liquid metaled it to get me home and in now just in the process of stripping her down too assess the damage. It appears the corrosion is all around the oil tank the rest of the frame is in good shape.

Could it be the heat accelerating the corrosion i use tenere all year round but always wash and acf50.

I just hope i can repair it :eusa_pray:

If you strip the rust and apply something like Loctite SF7503 rust remedy,it converts the area back to a stable base then use chemical metal,a two part filler, then it should be good. I have used this approach on crank cases and frame areas with success before.

Nikroc thanks for the tip. My plan is too get it stripped too a bare frame have it shot blasted and then do the repair and then powder coat yellow. :HappyRoll_ANPIUI:
Rust remedy on order. :blob7:

In that case you considered getting another frame etc?..

That was my origional plan but they are like hens teeth. I scoured ebay and rang 50+ breakers. Theres one on german ebay for 1300 plus shipping :wow: i simply cant afford that much. :eusa_boohoo:

I knew you would choose yellow. .....!, but seriously, make sure you get to see and examine the frame after shot blasting. ...sometimes it's straight onto primer/ powder coat. Cheers, Steve

Powder coating? You flash git! I just dab a bit of Hammerite onto mine.

I've always coated mine in ACF-50 as well but it still has plenty of surface rust. I've always wondered how effective that stuff really is.

I might give mine a closer inspection this weekend. Let us know how you get on with the powder coating.

To be fair i have beat my Tenere severely for the past 6years. All weathers and all terrain. It made a bit if a name for itself with the ride leaders at the touratech travel event being hugely suprised at its off road prowess. And its roar :109:

I allready spoke too my powdercoat guy. Amd hes gnna dip it get rid if tje original paint. Then vapoyr blast the are as its much more gentle than shot blasting and then give it me back. Ill do the rust treatment just in case then repair.

Then primer powdercoat yellow (I like yellow 😁) and then im going too underbody seal/waxoil/tetrosyl all around the oil tank to be triple sure this doesnt happen. As pulling my bike in bits with the sun blazing is depressing too say the least.

I will not let my Ten buy the farm though.......... Im not done riding it yet. Has anyone else checked theirs too see if they have corrosion around oil tank. Seems a prime place. Nice and warm and constantly wet from water getting to it via the "tunnel"

i just can't really see where such a thick metal can rust thrue to create a whole in it :107: a pic could help me check mine.

also be VERY carefull to keep all debris out of the oil tank when sandblasting :095: for a tiny bit of sand (wich you can never flush out of the frame) will destroy your engine...
