Confused about filters and snorkeling
I've looked at the stickies and researched on the web but I'm totally confused.
I'd like to remove the snorkel from my Tenere and replace the air filters with stage 1 and 2 can anybody explain to a newbie how to do that? Thanks in advance! |
the snorkel pulls out from the top..mine was hard so after I removed the air filter(on my R) I used a hairdryer to warm the rubber.
RE stage 1 +2 the filters are different on the R and X the Z uses these.. https://www.dnafilters.com/en/produc...DNA-Air-Filter https://www.dnafilters.com/en/produc...er-Stage-2-(S2) https://www.dnafilters.com/en/produc...rt-Stage-1-(S1 https://www.dnafilters.com/en/produc...er-Stage-2-(S2) https://www.dnafilters.com/en/produc...-S2-and-Filter There's four links which appear seperate when Im typing them BUT dont appear that way in the post. |
Cheers for the tip re warming the rubber. So the round filter is just a straight replacement for the original item? I just remove the snorkel altogether then the wee plastic cap with the hole is stage 2?
I'm sorry I'm really struggling to understand what's what! |
Have you looked at all 4 links??..
Stage 1 is the main filter Stage 2 is the side filter..replaces the side of the airbox itself. https://www.dnafilters.com/search?prdt=yamaha-xt660-z |
Sorry I must appear like a total tool. Stage 2 is the wee round bit and it's also the side box?
Can I just remove the snorkel altogether and put a round filter in? I don't know why I can't get my head round this! |
Stage one is removing the original air filter with the DNA and its adapter.
Stage 2 is where you remove/replace the air box's side cover with a filter that fits in its place. If you follow the last link i put up it will show you all the required bits. Speak to the UK people..they are really helpful and go outta their way to make sure your happy. |
Thanks for your patience! :)

Just use a screwdriver and pop the snorkel out it’s easy to do no need to heat it up. It will lever out. And as the other lad said. The stage one (inner filter ) is just a straight swop take old one out put a DNA or k&N in ,and stage 2 is take air box side panel off and replace with a DNA stage 2 filter. I did mine 4 weeks ago ( xt660r)take 15 mins simple job. I took my snorkel out cut all the bit off that go’s inside the air box, then drilled 5p size holes in the outer part of the snorkel ( each square) for more air flow then fitted it back. That way water would not drop back into the airbox when washing the bike as I noticed water does sit in around the snorkel. That’s just what I did as don’t want water going in the airbox if I can stop it.

As I said the rubber snorkle pulls up and out..if its hard, like mine was,and my mates just warm in up. DNA filters have been proven to flow more air and have an increased surface area due to more pleats of fabric/filter. BUT its your choice init. Have you looked at Kev's fueling/air mods yet?..loads of simple/free tips to help sort some 'issue's' ..some of us like to mod, others dont.. |
I've got an O2 and fuel mod on the way. I may need to ask for more advice!
I did manage to remove the standard exhaust, and tail replaced with a single MTC and a tail tidy. Was hoping to fit the fueling mods and an air filter/snorkel mod and see how it goes from there. Thanks both btw. |
Mods are simples to fit..comes with instructions..
|
The fuel mod and 02 mod are really easy to fit. And kev instruction are simple to follow. I did stage one and two air filters snorkel mod and fitted the fuel and 02 mod. But I kept the Oem exhaust as I have bad ears from years of aftermarket exhaust. Kev paperwork gives you a Guide to what to set the fuel mod at.
|
I had been doing so well, fitted the O2 controller and DNA filter, removing the snorkel.
Went to fit the fuel mod but there is no room to fit it. The sensor, when disconnected sits out about 10mm from under the tank. How do I cut and connect it? Sorry, thanks in advance. |

Attachment 7132
Attachment 7133 I actually had to look real hard to spot mine..when the tanks back in place its hard to see.. No cutting of anything I just used more cable ties.:happy8: |
Cheers for the above. I've managed to fit the 02 controller it's the variable fuel mod I'm having the problem with.
The sensor directly under the tank which has to be connected to the fuel mod has no room for maneuver. Do I need to take the tank off? Ta. |

Sorry....if you follow Kev's instructions/pictures it will show you both where to cut and how to join the new wires .Basically you are splicing the mod into an established circuit.
If you take the left hand side panel off,the lock side(two 10mm bolts) that's where you cut and join the mod into the circuit. The mod,on my bike sits as shown with the wires cable tied to frame rail. I stuck in place with silicone. |
Ah, thanks alot I feel like a bit of a tool.
