Big crunch, rear wheel locked...engine still works
Got pretty scared this morning when I heard a few nasty crunching noises and my rear wheel lock! Luckily didn't drop it and came to a stop, killing the engine with the switch.
Was recovered and the garage thinks it's something fairly serious inside the gearbox and they'll need to rebuild the engine...potentially costing me 1000. Just looking for advice really on what to do. The bike is a 59 plate XT660X with 16k miles, good condition with aftermarket exhausts. My two options are - Pay whatever the bike shop quotes me (800-1000) - Part ex it at a Yamaha dealer in its current state (not sure on value of bike but they did quote 2000 part ex value about 6 months ago). I'm desperately hoping it's nothing too serious but unfortunately looks like it could be, I appreciated any advice. |
Do you have the money to fix it because if you haven’t I wouldn’t strip the bike till you have, having the bike in bits is just another added complication.
If you do have the money then i’d Have the bike stripped and find out the worsed that being the crankcases are damaged, there was a guy on here a while back with the same dilema if the cases are kaput then you’ll need a motor I see a scabby one on eBay went for 500 quid in spetember and waiting for one to turn up will be a hassle. The part ex thing i’d doubt they’d give a grand(if that)not knowing what’s inside the engine. The only good news I got poo pooed a while back about XT’s going up in price but prices have certainly stiffened up by some margin so its not a complete loss,as the Yanks say you’ve just got to suck it up all part of biking. You have no location but if your in the midlands might have a cheaper option for you if it’s an engine repair or even just stripping it. |

I do have the money for a repair. I think a diagnostic from them would be only 100 or so anyway to dissemble and reassemble the engine. Do you think I'm better off just letting the garage that's gonna work on it do that instead? |
gearbox failure is not unheard of ...does the bike go up and down the gearbox ok?..clutch working etc?..
its your money however dont 'think' who much your going to be charged...get a definate quote...see what there hourly rate is... Maybe a good replacement engine would be a better option..unless you can find someone you trust to do the work.. |

But when gearbox’s go belly up it’s rarely a cheap fix. If you know the guys who are going to repair the bike well (ish) then you are into the realms of what do you call a man with a machine gun!!and go with it,alternatively pull the engine out and bring it over to the guys I know J7 M6 if it’s repairable no one will do it cheaper. |
I'd go with waynovetten' s advice, I've done a few gearboxes and none have been cheap to fix. I usually end up buying one from a scrap yard or ebay and using it as a donor taking the replacement parts I need from it and building a new box. If your gearbox stopped quickley then damage could be limited and much of it useable, check the cases carefully around the bearings and pin locations. Drop the engine oil from the gearbox and see if anything falls out. Take the clutch cover off, a simple job and may provide info on how bad it is.

Ive looked at all the ebays and theres nothing except a couple old scabby engines with too many kilometres on looks like the OP will have to ring around bike breakers.

yep, there are a couple of MT03 motors which use the same gearbox, in fact I think the motors are the same, just a few different externals like air box and gearbox breather, a whole motor and gearbox for 420, and a few parts like selector drum, forks, clutch basket and both gear box shafts...!
