Chosen not to upgrade filter/fueling/exhaust?
For my education: Anybody chosen NOT to upgrade filter/fueling/exhaust, and in that case, why not :102:
|
done the fuelling mods by Kev and end cans but not done air filter or anything on the induction side, there is just not enough power gain from the motor to make it worth while, they are low compression motors. if you want more power buy a more powerful bike
|
I can't tell you why not..
But I can tell you why I did... Exhaust, high 2 into 1 MM unit.. was to lose weight & gain 60mm of ground clearance even with the bash plate it still has 20mm more clearance than with the standard low pipes... Kev's fueling mods were simply to make the bike nicer to ride at lower speeds.. no surging.. Air filter.. I put a oiled foam OTR unit in.. no power gain with it..but I don't have to worry about water with the yamaha papper unit or dust getting though the DNA / K&N style filters.. my bike is a XTR.... . |
I found that there was no need for me to chase power from my Tenere. I liked it as it was.
All I did was get it to fuel better with the Kev O2 mod, which was good. The single best thing I did was fit an Ohlins shock to replace the utter disgrace that was OEM. Followed by the rear chain guide mod which removed the necessity for me to chase perfect chain adjustment, and thus the fear of chain derailment. |
OK guys,
Thanks for your comments :045: |
Barry White i love you just the way you are
I have decided to keep my Ten stock,, even though when i bought it it was half modded,,, with the air duct gone and a single slip on can which was just a bird scarer.
I had all the original exhaust and got a new air duct. and what i am trying to say,,,, i think the Ten is fine stock good power in all gears nice sound not to loud rides well . I love it just the way it is . |
Stock or Not Stock that is the ?
I am new to the forum and to the XT Z, for me with any bike greater gains come from suspension upgrades than spending a rake on the exhaust. I have had Wilbers, Hagons and my favourite's Nitron. The Wilbers were top quality, the Hagons were pure replacements ( Still a good bit of kit) on one of my bikes but the Nitrons are superb and a massive upgrade. I do not pick up the XT until next week but I am already pricing up the Adventure Shock from Nitron. I will have the forks upgraded as well, internals if possible and beefier springs.
I took a long time deciding on the XT Z, chosen for its ability to cover road miles well and able to go off road and not be as fickle as a pure dirt bike is on maintenance. Its clear to get a decent offroad capable XT the basics are clearly there but some upgrades are required. |
I had an xt660 18 months ago and i did the lot air filter dna stage 1 and 2 ,snorkel mod,02 sensor mod ,fuel mod ,beowolf exhausts. and bike was spot on still cut out from time to time when kicking down a gear but not often. sold that and have just bought 2 xt660 in the last 3 weeks both 2007 plates both almost as new one with 6000 and one with 7500 miles on them one and two owner bikes so not been used much.anyway one is a 2006 model on an 2007 plate and it rides 100% spot on no cutting out nothing and pulls all the way up to 100 mph I am NOT going to add any mods at all to it. why feck with it. the other bike is a 2007 model (02 sensor fitted to headers ) I have cut the snorkel down (inside air box bit) and added a k&n have bought the fuel mod (not fitted yet) and have to by the 02 sensor so i can fit both at same time. my honest opinion if your bike rides spot on with no problems at all I would leave it. the 2006 model bike i have needs nothing doing to it, no surging no cutting out pulls like a train (for an xt660 that is) so why pi** about with it. the 2007 rides grate again no surging or cutting out but feels like it could do with one or two more horses pulls all the way up to 90 mph then just lacks a bit so will put the mods on. PS the other member saying Nitron shocks are good he is right i have one on my FZ1N and my Tiger 800 and my wifes FZ8 you can not beat them for the money. and as i am trade i get a very good deal on them

Thanks again for all comments :039:
Bought my Tenere just south of Frankfurt last autumn (never tried the bike before) and rode it 1600 kilometers (1000 miles) to my home 50 kilometers north of Oslo in two days. The bike was a stock 2009, with less than 7000 kilometers on the clock. I was surprised to experience how comfortable it was cruising at 160 km/h (100 m/hr), in fact more comfortable than any of my previous bikes. And, there is no surging whatsoever. The only thing that came to mind was that it could be nice with a slightly crisper throttle response (doesn't it always?). After the 1600 kilometers in less than 40 hours my back-end was a bit sore, so late in the autumn I mounted a Touratech high seat. Didn't have the chance to try it out much before the winter set in, but I do believe that it has reduced the wind protection from the stock screen. I would like to do something about that (I'm 185 cm tall, btw), hopefully without increasing buffeting. I know, different experiences for all riders. None the less, any guesses to what would be my best alternative for the wind shield, Puig, Givi or the Touratech spoiler? Many thanks in advance  |
If it ain't broke don't fix it!
|
After mounting the Touratech high seat the increased wind blasts made me add a Givi high screen. Now good again.
I have kept the original handlebars but raised them 3 cm, and also tilted them forward a bit. Suits me perfect, both when sitting on the high seat, and when standing (I'm 185 cm. or just a tad over 6 feet). I purchased the Barkbusters, with Storm plastics. I was surprised to experience the uncomfortable high-frequency vibrations through the handlebars, so I added the external Barbuster weights. Helped quite a bit, but not just as comfortable as with the oem bar-end weighs. Another surprise was to experience the increased wind buffeting with the Barkbusters (for me, when combined with the tall screen and the high seat), so I ditched the Barbusters altogether, and life became wonderful again. I have ordered short levers off Ebay, and will rather carry the originals as spares instead of suffering with the Barkbusters (I do acknowledge that most people seem happy with their Busters.) Another thing. The bike runs soo smoothly, and economically, so I'm reluctant to do anything that could mess things up. But I do feel the temptations to try exchange the original exhaust with an Exan (without touching the fueling) in order to get some crisper throttle response in the lower and mid revs. - Could that disturb the smooth and economical riding I experience now? |
Fix Barbusters to the original bar-end weights
My last pre-winter ride yesterday.
By the end of the trip - just before going ny the petrol station to fill up the tank for the bike to be stationary through winter - I stoped by the house of a pensioned free-lance engineering parts supplier in my neighbourhood. And yes, he confirmed, can be done in no time: He will drill and thread my oem bar-end weights so I can mount my Barkbusters leaving the original weights on! Cool! :icon_cheers: |
i really advise the O2 eliminator/ controller, that's what made a nice difference.
smoother engine, as a thumper can use some smoothing out sometimes. if you could try, you'd never go back. |

But i tried for the 2018 season but could not get the header tubes to seperate from the oem exhaust. After a lot of violence i gave up so it still looking damn fine but have not heard it... There is no room in the frame for heating without taking out the airfilter box but i might give it a go again this winter - and be prepared to destroy the oem exhaust and header pipes in the process .... Don't think that anybody offers stainless steel downpipes for the xt660z at the moment - otherwise it would be an excuse to just cut if off and go stainless |
mods
wouldnt bother with exhaust mod absolutely no gain at no horsepower a couple of kgs in weight the only mod was the seat stock one is really bad swapped it out with this one well worth the money

The
Exan oval classic fitted this spring.

Oh, and now I too, have come to the conclusion that an adjusted fuel injection probably could improve rideability, particularly at the lower/middle rev range.
Since it seems the bike will stay with me: When budgets allow for it I will add, and get properly dialled, a PC/Autotune. |
Like Kev's?
|
Evidently good value.
But perhaps I will save just a little longer, and go for the solutions that Kev himself describes as the top-shelf solution, a PC well-tuned for the bike. If I'll keep the bike for 20 more year (will be 72 by then!! :wow:) it won't be that much extra per year (or per kilometre). |
As in a Power Commander and o2 sensor?..I was lucky.I got a second hand pcv and o2 sensor off ebay..couldnt resist it.
I have run both of Kev's mods and can thoroughly recommend then. |
