Silencer and Engine Health
Hello all!
I am a proud owner of a 2013 XT660Z Tenere, and this is my first post, hope to find and share great info in this forum :) Ok so my question is the following...I have a Dominator exaust on my Tenere, with the stock bdkiller that comes with it, which almost does not silence the motorbike. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/BfgAA...dU4/s-l500.jpg I ordered their "Hard" dbkiller, and it does change the sound A LOT which is great for my commute days. However, from looking at the exhaust dbkiller and the sound it delivers now, I see it is blocking immensely the air going out, could this cause any engines problem, or I can be relaxed about it? The top one on this picture the hard DB killer, the photo does not shoe but the tube is blocked meaning air flow is only trough the tiny holes. https://onlyfrompoland.com/wp-conten...miniaturka.jpg This video shows also the db killer in more detail: Thank you very much for your help!! |
Stock exhausts are relatively restrictive in order to pass emissions test etc..ANY after market exhaust will be less so as they all aim to allow the engine to breath easier.
Its all relative and imho an aftermarket exhaust, even with a decibel killer in it will be more freer flowing than stock. Question:have you got aftermarket air filters and Kev's mods too?... |
Welcome mate.

Wow, that is one tiny pass for all that air to go through.
I experienced very different problems with exhaust and DB killers when I come back to my R1 from 2005. ( I know its a different bike, but just to show you that it matters ) Went from bone stock to a catremover and aftermarket exhaust, it changed the power so bad that powerwheelies were hard to archieve. got a PC3 and tuned it and it was running like a rocket. Than I put the db killers in it that was blocking like yours. it had a hard time to ride properly when you took off at the traffic lights, just way to much pressure. I modified my DB killer by drilling much more holes and the problem was solved! sound was way louder too. What I would do if I were you: open up your exhaust by removing the popnails ( don't know if thats correct english ) and see if you can replace the Original 'sound reducing foam/cotton' ( if its allready there ) with better ones. When you have done that the standard DB killer should do his job just like the hard one. its a bit of work but well worth it |
Why drill extra holes in a decibel killer,ie something that reduces the sound output, to make it breath easier and louder?..same for the silencer packing....

no really sometimes they don't put much 'sound reducing material' in the mufflers and go with the cheap solution to get it legal: ****ty db killers. |
I understand the theory...its a noise killer...

why we drill holes in db killers and modifie the mufflers? simple: because the factory was to lazy to solve the problem. its common sense |
I don't believe their is a 'problem. Decibel killers are just that, designed to reduce the amount of noise emitted by the bike.
You either leave it in or take it out dependant upon your chosen level of noise..simples. We all have a choice. |

I mean normally I ride without DB killer, on the dikes I use an DB killer, on the track and in Germany I use one too so my bike rides with and without db killer. If my bike is not running properly with the DB killers, why should I not modifie it? should I not go to the track, or Germany? If I can adjust the DB killer in a way that the sound is still limited and legal for the track but the bike is running much better, than I my eyes thats the best solution. stand there and do nothing, that is nothing for me. |
As said previously..its a choice. We all modify our bikes in various ways. Its one of the joys of bikes.
I HAVE NOTHING FURTHER TO SAY . |
