End of the XT660Z Tenere

That's old news! At my Yamaha Exclusive Dealer there aren't hardly any allroad bikes on the showroom floor, except a secondhand Super Tenere and an XTX660. Really sad, only Tracers and MT's, not my cup of tea! But hey I still got my trusty 660 Tenere and the new XT700Z Tenere will come out in the fall and will be on the Eicma in Milan, Italy!

It may be old news but I couldnt see any posts about it on here so decided to post it for those like me who hadn't heard about it. I hope the new XT700 lives up to the 660 but apart from having more power somehow I doubt it will. Only time will tell.

I saw a German (English subtitles) you tube review on the new T7 and it weighed in around 185kgs with all its carbon bling. So the production version is expected to be a tad over 200kgs.

In my opinion nothing can replace the XT660. No bike will have the character, guts and fun appeal of the single cylinder XT. The stooopid EURO regs mean that a single cannot meet the regs any more cos the noise and gas is way over. Sad day indeed, the motor is so bulletproof and so much fun. RIP.

What really irritates me is that KTM and Aprilia can make a big single that complies with the new regulations but Yamaha cannot. It's only the cylinder head technology and then the fuel metering surely? Not the basic engine as theanything below the combustiuon chamber has nothing to do with emissions.
MT Yamaha with all of its technology and wealth surely must be able to overcomew the obstacles with emissions. That's my opinion................and the T7 will be too tall and too heavy. |
A Chinese/Italian company SMC has just released a Euro 4 650cc big single adventure bike too.

And in the USA you can buy the XR650L Honda. . a 650 single with a carburettor! , which meets the strict California emissions. Steve

Wow the XR650L is the rare 1980's version with electric start isnt it? I highly doubt those would meet Euro 4 regs though!

I know in Australia and Mexico the XT660Z Tenere is still for sale(other regulations...), so it will be in South Africa, I think. Yeah, it's a crying shame the legendary thumper dissapears from Yamaha's motorcycle range, as it has so much character and history. I will keep my trusty Tenere for days(and years...) to come and enjoy it!

People are still allowed to sell the older versions but manufacturers are not allowed to produce new models that are not compliant.

Wow they dont sell them in the UK, that is the exact same bike they started producing in 92! The only ones you can get here were literally made then, no new ones. In fact if they did I would have brought one instead of the XT but I could not find any for a decent price and didnt fancy a kick start only big single. Glad I got my XTX in the end though.

Australian's are still able to enjoy the more reliable than your Labrador Suzuki DR650SE off the showroom floor too.
