Wheel bearings

Just wondering where everyone gets their wheel bearings from?
Going to replace the rubber this month and while wheels are off ill do the bearings, only 8k miles but 09 bike. Tubes and cush drive also being done.

nikroc 25-06-17 08:50

Are they showing signs of being worn?...OR are you replacing them because they are 'old?'..

MarkXT 25-06-17 11:53

Replacing them as they are old and I'm there taking the wheels off. The front spindle isn't coming out that easily either so thinking it's best to do them

nikroc 25-06-17 12:04

fair enough..i thought that modern bearings are pretty much bullet proof,at least in terms ofl asting due to age and not miles..is your spindle clean?..i use a wire wheel on a drill and copper slip!!

when i have changed bearings its either been ebay..you pays your money and you take your chances OR take an original to a bearing/transmission shop..

As for tubes and rim tape, again modern stuff is a lot more robust than when i was a lad. I have just had my original tyres changed and the tubes and rim tape were in perfect condition. My bikes just clocked 10,000 and is 8 years old.

It's for peace of mind, I think the xt has sat outside for a short time with a previous owner, the pinch bolts on the front are in need of a major clean. I haven't been able to get the spindle out yet but it will be getting copper grease added to it.

I'm going to do the tubes again for peace of mind, the tyres are still well within the legal limit for tread but they are cracking so off to the bin.

That's good to hear that the original tape and tubes were still good

I,ve got a 09 bike with 37k on it and I bought a set of bearings from the Bearingboys for about 25 quid a set, haven't fitted them yet as mine still feel smooth. SKF 6203 2RSH x 4bearings f & r ID 17mm OD 40mm Width 12mm
SKF 6304 2RSH sprocketcarrier bearing ID 20mm OD 52mm Width 15mm

Thanks for that, great to have the info to hand.
I'll get the front wheel off this week and I'll see how they feel and maybe save myself a few quid

They are always sending me codes now so if you decide to buy before end of June here is the latest one with 20% off. BEARINGJUNE20.

XT660R, 2007,
front bearings changed at 50 000 km, as preventive maintenance (2016),
rear bearings changed at 40 000 km because they developed slight noise under some lean angles.

nikroc 27-06-17 17:28

I forgot to mention that i bought a 14mm hex head oil sump nut removal tool from a car shop fot 3.50 to remove the front spindle.

After undoing the pinch bolts I couldnt move it with 2ft breaker bar BUT it turned immediatley with a battery operated impact gun!

MarkXT 28-06-17 01:59

Thanks for the code Crofty.

That's a good distance out of them cca, maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit so I'll check when I get the wheels off.

Nikroc I've order a 14mm hex socket as couldn't get one locally, hopefully here in a day or two. Sounds like it could be fun getting the spindle out. Still anticlockwise, it's not reverse threaded or anything daft?

What's people's thoughts on this, is there something missing, seems like a rather large gap? This is the left side of the wheel as you sit on the bike

After this picture... I would be tempted to change the bearings :087:. Maybe they are still OK. At least, change the seals. Put some grease inside and on the seal lips to prevent rust and ensure better sealing against ingress of water or whatever.

MarkXT 29-06-17 11:31

Thanks new bearings and seals ordered up for the front, might as well do it while the wheel is off and before mot

Are you missing the top hat spacer?..

MarkXT 29-06-17 18:13

There was 2 spacers that came off with the axel, 1 either side

nikroc 29-06-17 18:46

in that case its 'normal' assuming the spacer was fitted correctly id change them and pack with grease.

MarkXT 29-06-17 19:11

There is certainly a space behind the seal on the left side that isn't on the right hand side,

nikroc 29-06-17 20:00

for some reason i'm unable to post a picture/diagram that shows the genuine setup..i simply googled xt660 wheel and searched..sorry i cant be more helpfull

MarkXT 30-06-17 00:53

I've had a look at it on the fowlers website and I think it's all there, I'll know better when I put it back together in a few weeks
