Disconnected decompression mechanism
 

Hi guys - seeking advice about the decompression mechanism.

Im having some major work done on my Tenere such as new piston and rings etc etc and the mechanic doing this work notified me about that the decompression mechanism was disconnected on my bike.
I wasnt aware of this at all and to be honest I dont know much about it at all. The only issue I have had with the bike is high fuel comsumption and a dead ECU a while ago. Never had starting problems related to the decomp mechanism.
So the question is should we connect back the decomp mechanism or leave it like it is?

To be more specific - its the pin to the decompression lever thats missing. According to the guy who is working on my bike he has not been removing it or he has t lost it - it simply wasnt there at all. So if this is right I have been riding very long without that part. Although nothing is 100 % sure.

Will I be able to ride the bike 1000-1500 kms up to Santiago and fix it there (get the missing part) or is this part and mechanism vital for the engine and try get it done here in the Patagonian bush....

You will be able to ride it without the decompression pin.

It is quite common for the decompression pins to come loose and cause a top-end rattle. I've not heard one go AWOL completely though? As you say it's either been removed and not refitted, or it's broken and fallen out? In which case your biggest concern might be where it is currently residing within the engine?

There are two things that causes me worries right now and that is as you mentioned - where is that pin now if it has come lose in one way or another? Where is it possible for that to go? And what damage can it possibly make?

Secondly there a new ticking/clicking sound from the engine now - can it be the decomp shaft that makes this noise? Or what could it be?

I have finally got the decomp pin. However the mechanic that works on my bike says its really hard to install and that the whole camshaft needs to come loose. And he is not certain of that it will work out well. So he kinda advises me to not have it installed and just continue without it. Im a bit sceptical to that.

So the question is - should it the decomp pin be replaced/is it neccesary and advisable?

And does the camshaft need to come off to replace this pin?
