Error 51

Hi all

I'm new on here and new to Yamaha immobilisers!
I've just bought an 05 XTX which is a crash damaged salvage bike.
It's got an error code 51 and the immobiliser light is flashing. No spark but it turns over.
I have the red key and 2 black keys. I have tried all keys, no joy

Any geniuses out there who know how to get the beast into life? I can't see why there would be an error if the bike has just had an accident.
Battery flat for a long time?
Lean angle switch?
Can't see why there would be a problem with all 3 keys so guess it's something else....
Any comments/help most appreciated

Cheers

Will

I'm no immobilizer expert but looking through the service manual code 51 is an immobilizer fault 'code cannot be transmitted between the key and immobilizer unit'.

The troubleshooting guide starts with:

1.checking the main, ignition & backup fuses,
2.checking the battery (min 12.8v open circuit),
3.check the main switch for continuity
4.check the immobilizer system wiring

And then checking for various voltages on the immobilizer itself. (I'd recommend getting a service manual!)

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in with more info, but at least you can make a start with that!

I'll second the above as a good starting point.

What sort of 'accident' did it have? Front, left side, right side etc. Was it stolen at the time it had the accident?

There are a multitude of ways the immobiliser comms can get damaged from ham-fisted thieves messing with wiring or the ignition barrel to physical crash damage to dash, ignition, wiring and ECU from going down on the deck.

The red key is a programming key and should not normally be used to run the bike. The other two are registered from that red key's code to the ECU. A 51 error code means the error/problem is between the receiver (in the ring round the ignition barrel) and the ECU which is why all the keys fail to start the bike. Check for visible physical damage between these two areas.

Thanks for the replies

The accident damage (bike not stolen) resulted in a bit of dash damage, bent key, digital dash complete but mounting bolts broken and some damage to the ignition lock surround. It's only a sheepish ding in the plastic body but I guess that could be the problem....
I've seen the immobiliser emulator replacement things on eBay but my bike is a 2005 and they say they're 2006-2009.
Manual
Shows 6 wires going to immobiliser, the eBay product shows 4....

I'll pull mine apart to see what's there in reality.
I checked the fuses and they're all good.
Wiring to ECU a bit chaffed (not from accident, looks like the side panel has been rubbing for a while). I can see the worst damage to this wiring is a brown wire but the manual doesn't show a brown wire.

I'm bored of this already!! Any ideas?

Thanks again

That'll more than likely be the problem.
