So I had what I think was the decomp pin causing a rattle and decided if I was going in there to look at that area of the bike I would fit a stage 2 cam :) while I was in there!

First mistake I made was I assumed you got the Raptor 660 cam but after ordering one and it arriving from the states I discovered that was an erroneous assumption and had to send it back and order the 700 raptor hotcam

While I was checking part numbers I discovered that the grizzly 700 uses the same decomp mechanism as the Raptor and bought a worn complete grizzly cam for $30nzd to rob it of the decomp mechanism to fit to the hotcam :)

Bike is 2005 and has 43587km on the clock
this pic is cam comparison left to right stock, Grizzly, hotcam.

The correct cam arrived from the states today so I put her in and fired her up after work, got to the point of tank on and running and decided I had won. Just plastics and seat to go on now :)

Hotcam installed you can see that the timing mark doesn't line up 100% with the pointer cast into the head and it didn't when I pulled it apart. If you look carefully you can see where I scratched a line in the head to show where the cam mark lined up to when I disassembled the motor. If you go one tooth either way it is miles off, must be due to wear in the cam chain.

Pics showing how I pulled the radiator out of the way, the home for the cam and the chain tied up.

Also I have been hunting around in the vip section trying to find the power commander maps I must be blind. Can anyone point me in the right direction? - found it with google.

Back together with plastics on now.
Mod list is MTC exhaust with baffles removed, DNA stage 2 filter kit, air box snorkel in (sounds horrible with it out) PC3, Stage 2 hot cam, Scott oiler, wave rotors, crash bobbins, shiny blue anodized bars :winner:
Now I need it to stop raining so I can go for a good ride!!! see how the new map works with the cam.

I thought I would update this and let everyone know my thoughts on the cam mod. Firstly I started with the only map I could find for a stage 2 cam and it was far too rich over the entire rev range and looked at other maps and they all looked to rich too. I have slowly been removing fuel from the map to where I'm happy with how the bike runs and the economy is ok. I'm getting the fuel light between 180-200km now compared to about 150km with the original serco stage 2 map. I have attached my current map for people.
I really need to get her onto a dyno to fine tune her now.
4ish months ago when I first did this I wanted to see if it would pull rev limiter in some of the lower gears and from memory limiter in 3rd is 120kmh and 150 in 4th I haven't found limiter in 5th yet but suspect it is only about 180 best I have seen on the clock so far is 177.
Power wise I believe this is a good mod, not that it feels far more powerful but it has moved the power and torque up the rev range. The XT motor makes far more torque then power so moving the torque up the rev range makes it more usable for faster riding.
Pulling away from a stop first gear is far more aggressive now as you don't run past the torque band so quickly, I actually found myself pulling accidental wheelies at times pulling away from the lights and intentional ones are much easier now and I have never been good at wheelies.
Before the cam mod if I was doing 100kmh and wanted to pass a car I found I would just stay in top and roll on the throttle but now with the cam you can drop to 4th and really get some acceleration happening.
Sitting at 80kph before I would use 5th now I use 4th as the motor just feels happier at a higher rpm.
My rattle cam back to my frustration, I inspected the operation of the decomp pin and it seemed to be retracting as normal so I decided to eliminate any possibility of it causing the rattle so I removed the decomp mechanism completely. I'm not sure if it is placebo effect but it feels like the bike is running slightly better now, it is starting better with a very slight reduction in cranking speed but it fires up sooner. However my rattle was still there!! So I finally got out the screwdriver stethoscope and started checking around the motor to see where the rattle was coming from, well it turns out it wasn't coming from the motor at all but the l/h muffler! So I pulled the muffler and found it has a spark arrester plate down near the header side that had broken away from its welds and was slightly loose, I knocked that out with a hammer and punch, re fitted the muffler and my elusive rattle was finally gone! I swear it sounded like valve rattle the noise must have been traveling back up the exhaust to make it sound like it was coming from the engine!
Still wanting more power so time to start saving up for a 700cc barrel and piston!
