Hello from the canary island of lanzarote

Hi im alan 57 years old, i have a 1996 xt660 tenere i found this site by chance, and yes i have a problem with the bike, annoyingly this just happened as dark fell so couldn't see anything on the bike and so i resorted to the internet, 2 hours later i found this site. my problem is simply the carburrettor drain plug or lack of one, the old girl got me home this afternoon but when i came to use it this evening she fired up then stopped and i have petrol gushing from the bottom of the float chamber, when i searched a parts list online it said this was a pipe and not a drain plug. it seems to be located in the centre of the float chamber and in the half light i couldn't see any more detail. any advice greatly appreciated. thanks Alan

:hello: and :welcome: to :660:

We are very happy to have you here, and we'll see if anyone knows a solution for your problem, but unfortunately the range of XT's we specialize in are the ones from 2004 to current date, and these are all fuel injected bikes with no carburetors but throttle bodies.

There used to be a site / forum dedicated to your range of bikes but I can't find the link anymore.

However have a look at these parts listing http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/xt_600_e/96/

and see if this is what you must look for on eBay

Good luck

Hello mate. Sorry to hear your problem. Try getting in touch with this guy he's been dealing with XT's for donkey's years so should be able to help if you have no other luck.

This is the kind of stuff he does,

:006: Welcome to the forum Alan.

I used to have a 3YF myself back in the day!

The pipe (and it should be a pipe) you're talking about is the float bowl overflow. If fuel is spilling out here then you've probably either got: (a) A punctured or split float that's not rising enough to close the needle valve, or (b) Some crud/grit/dirt preventing the float needle from sealing/seating properly.

Buy yourself a gasket/seal set for the carbs and strip and examine the float bowl and check the float/needle operation.

One of the most common problems on these bike's are the way the seals, gaskets and floats get tired and fatigued with age, particularly as the twin carb setup is fiddly and tends to get neglected on older bikes. You'll be really pleasantly surprised with what a relatively cheap to do carb "freshen up" will achieve. You'll wish you'd done it years ago.

BTW - As has been pointed out, we're mainly about the fuel-injected 660s here. You're more than welcome of course, but the place you need to visit for info on the 5-valve Tenere is:
