Not sure about Tom Tom 1? Depends on the supply voltage the unit needs. It may well be 5V, or some other voltage lower than The bike's electrical system. Does the cigarette lighter plug look like it contains a solid state transformer? If it does, then no you can't just chop it off. That would put 12V straight through to it cause trouble.

You need to have a look what it says on the cigarette lighter plug and check what the cradle's input voltage needs to be. Have you got a manual for it?

As I suspected; the plug has a built in transformer to supply 5V to the cradle. I have a Tom Tom Rider 2 and the cradle has the transformer built in so it's leads can be wired directly to the bike's 12V electrical system. You cannot simply cut off the plug.

Your best bet would be to open up the plug, solder two wires to the input side of the transformer and reseal it sans the actual plug contacts. You will then be able to mount the remains of the plug/transformer remotely and connect up to the spare connector behind the dash.

If you don't fancy adapting your plug in this way, you could either source a 12V-5V DC transformer, or maybe try and get hold of another Tom Tom Rider 1 plug to modify.

Here's an off-the-shelf 12/24V to 5V 5A step down transformer that'll do the job perfectly and no need for any DIY electronics:

Simply wire the input straight into the spare connector and then cut off the Tom Tom's cigarette lighter plug and join the wires left to the transformer's output. The transformer is small, sealed and waterproof and could be mounted anywhere. I'd suggest behind one of the textured panels on the tank, behind the indicators or the ones either side of the radiator.

Thanks Pete....that's exactly what I need, just ordered it. The Sat Nav itself works fine and only cost me �20 from a friend. ..so if can sort out a neat way of powering it then it's well worthwhile! Steve

Tehre is plenty of space in the grey/black plastic of the fron fairing to hide the power supply

I've the psu for my garmin in the right side and relais/switches in the left.
