Basic improvements
 
Hi Guys,

I have a brand new XT660Z (94 miles on the clock) and I'm trying to understand if there are issues I need to solve or aftermarket parts I should get before start traveling long distances.

I know this section is limited to the engine but I didn't know where to post. I am referring to the bike in general though. Right?

There are some things that can be improved, as with any bike, but essentially it'll do what you want as it is. I would always recommend living with it for a while and getting to know it. That way you'll be able to work out for yourself what needs work and what your priorities are. It'll save you money in the long run.

I've seen a lot of people hit the accessory catalogues hard as soon as they get their bikes and then come to regret some of their decisions later, and I'm guilty of that! Had I known what I do now, I never would have bought Yamaha panniers, handguards or an Akrapovic exhaust; all of which have gone! I would have spent the money saved on improving the suspension, but it took me 10,000 miles of riding to work that one out! ;)

I am interested to know why you think that handguards were a waste of time.

Oh and what did you replace the Yamaha panniers with?

Well mainland Europe is not that remote :-) And how often do you puncture ?

Yes if you go to remote places on questionable roads I'll recommend being able to patch a tube and have spare clutch handle etc. Otherwise it is just an inconvenience and may delay the adventure a bit to find a shop that can help.

Taken mine through Europe and Africa to Capetown, Yamaha handguard's and boxes . Fitted tool boxes so I did not have to unpack tools and spares, survived desert, forest, wild life and light fingered people and things, chimps and baboons are very light fingered. A dent in one box, a broken corner but all still watertight.

Try it and see what you are not happy with, most changes were what I knocked up on the road or made at home. Spend your money on the ride and trip.
