Most people report 15,000-20,000 km from OEM chain in the chain and sprocket life database here.

Clip links are notorious for breaking, you were lucky not to be injured! Soft links that you rivet yourself are far more reliable. I guess endless chains are OK if you don't mind the extra work required to fit them.
