Which Pyrenees mountain roads?

Planning to do a week in the Pyrenees mountains in May. Which routes is a must do. I know quite a few of you guys have been (Steve and Steve) so will appreciate any advice. Looking for nice windy roads through high mountains. And is there any really special biking camp sites not to be missed.

Hi Jacques,

You'll be spoilt for choice for good roads in the Pyreneese most of which will be well suited to the Tenere. I prefer them to the Alps which are too busy.
There's some great roads to the south in Spain and also to the west of Perpignon around the wine regions of Fitou. Andora is great and there's plenty of tax free bike shops there so if you need any spares or tyres head there. I can't comment on camping as I've opted for hotels but again I believe there to be lots to choose from.
How are you planning to get there? It's a long ride from Calais and you'll clock up the miles and square off your tyres if you're hoping to do it all in a week. The ferries to Northern Spain are a good option worth looking into.

Was planning to do the St Malo ferry and all down the atlantic coast to Pau. Then a week of roaming across the mountains and back again. Thanks for the advice. Its fun getting all the bits and dreaming. Fingers crossed for not too much rain.

Quietly hoping some other members may be in the same area at the same time for a meet up to share the fun. Should be in the Pyrenees the second and third week of June. Fingers crossed for some sun and not too much rain.

Hi Jacque , sounds like a great trip ahead...if your anything like me you will be enjoying the planning, poring over maps etc. I'm afraid Ireland beckons again for me, probably end of June but flexible depending on the forecast . It's the thought of day after day riding that keeps me cheerful on these wintery days!. There's also the Adventure Travel day at the Ace Cafe in March and of course our own xt660.com meet up in May. Let me know if your down this way anytime or fancy a meet up , Steve

Jacques le Roux 18-01-16 22:44

Will do. How about meet up Sunday morning?

If it's mountains I'll take the Picos over anything else, but!! one of the great pieces of info I got off here was about a place called Belchite.

Now if you know anything about Spain scratch the surface and the civil war is not as far away as you would think, any other country and this place would be a big bucks tourist attraction but even with good friends in Spain the moment you start asking questions phew there's lots of feet shuffling.

If you can go before someone does have the balls to turn into another Oradour sur Glane.

And oh!! I'd go down the middle of France plum a line south of Orleans until you get to the mountains and then ride to the Picos and then catch the boat home because you'll be cream crackered just hope you get a good crossing,if you get a bad one you'll not forget in a rush I can tell you,and the same if you get a good one.
