Oil cap cross threaded
 

I ask this here because I'm off to the shops tomorrow and don't want to come back with a new engine and a silly hat to go with it.

I checked the oil this morning and cross threaded the cap on the way back in (silly hat needed!)... When I got to the destination ( 2km ride) the smoke, I believe it was squirting oil on my radiator, notified me of the issue! After checking the engine, once it had cooled, the dip has only a smigen on the bottom... There was oil there when it was still hot however.


The oil light wasn't on and it still turns fine. Do I just full it up with suitable oil (from the manual) and go again? Am I safe to assume the cap was the only issue here? (Would seem to be but I don't want to brick my engine!)

Personally I would just fill it up and suck it and see. I've run my oil off the dipstick plenty of times (not on purpose) and its still running past 100,000 miles without issue. I'm sure the engine wil let you know if something isn't right

Much to my shame I have done the same thing. Didn't fit the cap/dipstick properly, got two miles down the road and pulled over in a cloud of oil smoke. I refitted the cap, rode back the two miles, cleaned everything and topped the oil up. That was three years and 12,000 miles ago and the bike is absolutely fine!

So I'd say, from first hand experience, don't worry about it. Top the oil up, ride and enjoy! :D

Thanks guys, I ended up doing just that. I popped just a little in first just to be safe.

Right old newbie panic though, woke me right up and kept me up since I left the bike at uni overnight with a alarmed disk-lock attatched right next to some accomidation, it started blowing a right storm so I was worried the alarm would piss a student off....

Anyhow all was good!

On an oil change once, I didn't replace the copper washer on the frame bolt.

After a week or so, I noticed a rather large pool of oil under my bike at the petrol station, and the bolt had come loose and worked its way out.

I have no idea how long I'd ridden with it leaking oil, so my mate took a trip to the Yamaha garage, borrowed me a new bolt and a litre of oil and I limped home, nursing it carefully.

Changed the oil and haven't had any problems.
Fingers crossed, but that was over 20,000 miles ago!
