XTZ fails to start
Grateful for any ideas on this. My bike is a 2011 XTZ Ten and was bought new in 2013. 6K miles and very well looked after. Power-commander fitted.
Yesterday I fitted a new 12v socket with fuse, the Battery was disconnected twice in a couple of minutes while this was done. Bike will not now fire up, Cranks strongly, goes through the start up cycle as normal, all lights show but never fires. Thinking I'd upset the immobiliser I switched keys and tried the Red key, still does not fire. I've checked the 2x30 amp fuses and all fuses in the fuse box, all good. I did not short anything during the work. Any ideas on where best to start? What would get upset by twice being disconnected in a short space of time? |
Years and years ago on an very old Tenere, the battery terminal came loose and flummoxed me because I didn't think it could be that simple, it's worth a try
|
I would check and re-check those terminals. Something is bound to be loose. More than likely the ground terminal if the starter motor can't pass current.
All your lights, horn, power commander and dashboard work, I presume? |
Pull the plug out and check for a spark.
|
As stated, it cranks strongly.
Batt terminals all tight, dash lights all work. Never fires. Will try plug tomorrow. Thanks for the replies |

If there's no spark, you have an electrical problem.
If there's spark, then it's either the plug or fuel supply. |
Check the piggy-back crank position sensor sensor connection on the Power Commander loom. Make sure the bike's own connectors are snapped home tight. It is a fiddly connection to make on the Z and often they aren't connected properly and as a result can be easily disturbed/knocked when doing other maintenance jobs on the bike, particularly around the battery area and when feeding wires round the frame/under the tank. A dicky crank pulse signal will cause a no spark/no start scenario.

Thanks, Pleiades. I've checked all PC connectors on the right hs of the bike and all connectors are so far made and clean. Just having a cuppa before taking the tank off to have a look under. Spark Plug is bone dry.
I'm still drawn towards an Immobiliser freeze fault and to this end I removed the Batt connections again and let the thing sit, keys out for a couple of hours, but no joy. It's hard to believe taking the batt terminals off could lead to all this! |
Have you done a spark test yet?

I had all the Pc's connections off, all were good I'm considering taking the the Power-commander off altogether and seeing if she will fire up. Any thoughts/suggestions gratefully heard. I don't know enough about the Fuel Injection/ PC to say what's at fault, hence my thoughts about taking the PC off. |
Have you checked that the spur off the wiring loom to the fuel injector hasn't rubbed through and isn't shorting out on the RH frame rail? It is quite a common problem on the Z and gives similar trouble to what you are reporting.
I had to pack mine out with a foam pad... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...psd6f087fd.jpg |

So it looks as though the PCV was somehow upset by the batt terminals being off/on/off/on a couple of times. I'm glad she's a runner again but disappointed the PC appears so fragile. It came from Off the R de and is only about a year old. Will see what they say. Thanks a million for your helpful suggestions. |
follow up to above
Well I have received a new Power Commander from OTE and fitted it but not tested on the road.
OTE have to send the PC to Dyno-Jet Holland, all of which takes time. OTE kept me informed of what was happening, no one ever mentioned of course what problem they found. OTE put a generic map in and if it runs well I think I'll not bother with a rolling test, OTE had never heard of my Scorpion twin end cans! I'll iet you know how it goes! Bikes been on the table all the time. Hundays new blue poly cush rubbers are nearing my shores so I'll wait the arrival of them before testing the whole thing. I gone down with cabin fever and need a ride to clear it! |
