Possible gearbox damage
 

G'day guys, first post so please be gentle.

I own a 2010 XT660Z Tenere, and whilst parking (reversing into the gutter) my left foot slipped and over I went. The bike came down on the left side, noticeably on the gear selector. When I picked the bike up there were a few minor scratches etc but I didn't notice anything else.
Upon starting the bike I couldn't select a gear, and upon closer inspection the gear selector had about 1/2 an inch movement. When I pulled the selector away from the motor I could select gears, but whilst riding it seemed it would vibrate in and select neutral.
The local yamaha agent ascertained that a circle was missing that held a washer in and the selector out.
After picking up the bike the problem is still there, just not as bad.

Has anybody has any experience with this issue, any help appreciated.

They are probably referring to the E-clip and washer that hold the end of the shift shaft in place on the LHS? It is possible that the stopper arm might have bent as well (at the other end of the shaft) if the shaft itself has moved/is moving a lot? The stopper lever arm is behind the clutch.

I would not be tempted to ride the bike while it is in this state. A damaged/bent shift shaft, bearing, stopper lever arm etc. can lead to terminal gearbox failure if not attended to.

Fortunately, the shift shaft and its parts can be replaced with the engine in the frame. Only the RH engine cover (with oil/water pumps) and clutch need to be removed and it isn't massively time-consuming. It is well worth you (or a dealer/mechanic) removing the clutch and giving the shift shaft and its associated components a thorough investigation.

The bike is booked in tomorrow and I'll pass on this info to them.
