Tinted headlight covers

In South Africa most motorcycles had orange headlight covers on to make them more visibile, especially on the motorways. I can't say I've ever seen this on any bike since moving to London.

They worked very well. You could spot a motorcycle from far away.

Like these ones.

Are they legal in the UK?

So to answer my own question. It seems legit else they wouldn't be selling them, right?

EDIT

and upon further reading it IS illegal. :smoke:

I searched and got this

Legal or not, it's very important to be visible, and I'm quite sure that any reasonable cop/person would not argue this fact

Hope it shed some light to the question

Do not follow trends in South Africa because this is not a very (if at all) law abiding country. There is hardly a day that I don't have to stop or swerve to dodge a motorist that trespass the law. So here we go to all extremes to save ourselves, much like te Wild West of yesteryear.

Thanks for the info.

I don't want to do anything unlawful, that is why I'm investigating. I am from SA as well but work in London and I've had the orange covers before because I always felt the orange was much more visible.

Anyway. I'll have to get the clear ones I guess. I do have a set of nice and bright LED lamps that helps

According the Road Vehicles Lighting Act, there are two choices of colour that comply with regulations in the UK and they are white or yellow (not amber).

www.legislation.gov.uk

See:

Schedule 4, part 1, section 7

REQUIREMENTS RELATING TO OBLIGATORY DIPPED-BEAM HEADLAMPS

Schedule 5, part 1, section 7

REQUIREMENTS RELATING TO OBLIGATORY MAIN-BEAM HEADLAMPS

So, if you want coloured headlamp covers, then yellow is your only "legal" option.

Another option if you think Amber 'up front ' will improve your visibility is a replacement screen in Amber or another bright colour. . Powerbronze do them I think. Steve

A legal option is to just swap out the bulbs with some that provides yellow light.

Color temperature are measured in Kelvin and a very yellow one is 2500K while a major brand like Osram All Season H7 or Osram All Season Selective Yellow is 3000K

I've tried the NOK7656 - NOKYA HYPER YELLOW H7 55W 2500K Light Bulb For Motorcycle but it did not last long, even trough it was the vibration resistent version.

Now i'm riding with Michiba Gold Vision 3000K from EX_Technik on ebay. They have lasted 10000km so far with the low beam on all the time

Yes, fitted them in march/april of 2014 and the picture is from june/july 2014

There is a picture of the Narva here, but the Gold Vision is almost as yellow. The two small ones below are just cheap ebay yellow spots and not really waterproof. One of them has died. The do not provide any usefull light at night but the are strong enough to be very visible even in sun light and the idea is just to change the profile to something a bit odd that hopefully will not be overlooked.

I have not been riding much. A lot of travel for work, and generally not using it in the holidays where I prioritize to spend to with the family.

The profile picture is cut from a piece of video - I've included a bit larger one.

Next time I'll try NARVA 98657 Contrast+ that is 2700Kelvin
