replacement rear tyre
 

hi folks need some advice My rear tyre TKC 8o is wearing down too fast for my liking, i do around a thousand miles per month so a new tire every three and a half months is too much for me. I am happy with the front TKC 80 but want an alternative that is compatable for the rear. I realize there is proberbly not a knobbly suitable but an adventure styled tread for the road will have to do. The only alternative at present is the original Metzler tourance which i took off at 5 thousand miles with about 6 mm of tread left, however I did not like the tramlining on this tyre. What do you recommend?

I ran a Heidenau K60 for a while with a TKC front. Worked well enough. Heidi is very hard compound and lasted ages, too long in fact!

If you want a tyre that is long lasting then a K60 is a solid bet. Sod to fit by hand and doesn't offer as much feedback as a softer compound tyre, but you can't have everything.

Hi What was the K60 like on wet roads?

Fine on wet roads, good in the dry. The only thing with them is, if you want to push on, they just don't quite feel right, you just never feel like you know what's going on. I suppose the best way to describe them is a bit "ploddy" not at all sporty (unsurprisingly)? Nothing dangerous though and the grip is more than enough, it is literally just the feel and feedback is a bit lacking (even with K60s front and rear).

If I was commuting regularly, a courier, or on a tight budget they'd be top of my list.

Funnily enough, that's what I've got on mine at the moment. I've used them on and off for the last ten years. They are an excellent tyre and well-suited to the XTZ. They grip and handle well, wet or dry, with excellent feedback. They are OK off road if you avoid anything muddy, ideal on gravel/sandy trails. Much better on road than a TKC, but not as good off it. But there's a catch...

You'll be lucky to see 2000 miles out of the rear and they aren't the cheapest! (They also drone a bit at certain speeds.)

If you can afford to change the rear three times a year, then they are IMHO an excellent choice for the Z. If you're financially savvy, then look elsewhere!

K60 Scout
 

I'm another of the K60 Scout fans. Been running a 140 rear which has a continuous strip of rubber in the centre of the tyre which is great for lots of road miles. That said I'm going to fit a 130 next time. This doesn't have the central strip and will be better off road as a result. At least that's my thoughts. For the price and mileage you get out of them I think they are good.

It's enough to make your head explode sometimes choosing tyres. But after scoring my first flat on the Ten ( last one I had on a motorbike was over 20 years ago ! ) dry wall screw through the rear Tourance brought forward plans to change them as I used tyre weld to get me the last 2km's to home.
So after much deliberation I decided on a set of Pirreli MT60's. Au$115 for the front & Au$145 for the rear.
Not as off road oriented as I was going to go, but with temperatures close to 40 degrees at the moment TCK 80 wouldn't last long this time of year on tar. Also got some heavy duty tubes while I was there.
Snake boy gave them a good rap in an earlier thread saying he got over 12,000 k's out of them. Hoping to get them fitted up in the next few days.

Forgot to mention that I considered TKC 70's but looking at some reviews on Revzilla a lot of riders were complaining of serious front wheel wobble at speed. Probably higher speed then the Tenere cruises at but a concern none the less. No reports of problems with the rear.
Any one here had trouble with TKC 70's?
