It's surprising how many second hand bikes (not just XTs) you see that are knocking on in years, yet still wearing the'r OE hoses. The recommended interval to change them is 4 years for good reason. Changing brake fluid and renewing hoses are two of the most commonly neglected maintenance tasks, and probably two of the most significant in terms of rider safety.

For anyone buying a second hand bike, if you can't be sure how old the fluid and hoses are - change them.

Only 2 line kit Pepsi. XT660R only has one front caliper. Still not a bad price when shopping around.

Indeed Pleiades, having changed the brake fluid last year and covered some 1300 miles since then (the XT is my 2nd bike) the brakes have performed adequately. Only the challenging fell ride over my local passes have highlighted this fading.

I can be sure the OE hoses are as old as this 2007 example. So in need of a change then.

The only thing for me is the front hose is longer than most bikes being one that crosses over the speedo/clocks and down the left hand fork leg. Will a braided hose not be less flexible to accomadate the same route of the OE front hose? Thanks again for any further advice folks!

hi guys ....an update.....did a rear brake bleed.....and it needed it. Dark fluid now bled out with new DOT4. Also found some aluminium reflective tape which iput on the hose where Iit passes behind the right hand Leo Vince connector pipe (between the right hand header down pipe and rear can). Have done two trips over Hardknott pass (one journey with a pillion) and one over Wrynose pass. Rear brake fade sorted!

The journey was eventful with the air ambulance landing in WrynoseBottoms bbetween Hardknott and Wrynose passes!
The above photo though poor shows where this tape has been applied to the hose.
