aghhhhh chain

Bought myself a chain splitter a few months ago thinking I've always wanted to change my own chains. After a ride back to Northern Ireland a few weeks back I noticed the chain has finally not started going where every good ride it needs tightened. new chain and sprockets ordered. fit the rear ok, let my still near new 16 tooth one on as I'm going to Wales and would prefer the ride down better. I get the old chain off in seconds, place the new one on point the river link in and after 15 mins of faffing get the link on but have over done one of the rounded heads. nip down the local bike shop get a new link and decide I'll fit it tonight, take the old link off which therefore means it's now scrap to find the new link I just bought doesn't fit.

so tues morning ring loads of dealers to see if they have the link required and hopefully they do or there might have to be a new chain bought for the xt meet

rant over!!!

Get a link with a spring clip?! ;)

Put a spring clip link in and come down to Wales. I've got a proper spare soft link that we can fit if you want.
............and spare split links and a bit of spare chain , and .........:whisper:

Normal split link will suffice IMO ...I've had one one on for the last year..I change same when the split link clip becomes sharp.

This also allows one to soak chain in clean chainsaw oil every once in a while.

As usual no dealers have any stock of anything anymore. had to order one new from b and c express. hopefully 1st class post will have it here on wed!!! if not I'm buying a new chain!!!

spoke to two dealers and they said they'd never put a split link on a big single that size, doesn't matter though as I asked the dealers for one too but no stock!!

here's to wed

...or, if your worried about it, wire lock the spring clip in place.

Yes...some dealers say that,(but will also sell you a motocrosser or enduro with a split link,at the same time)...but at the end of the day IMO it's only 48bhp ish....my Gas Gas 300 has more,as has any MX'er etc. and they always did and do run a split link. I never broke a chain back in the day even with the grunt of my CR500 lol

Road racers safety wire their split links...get up to the North West with an anorak and do a spot of chain spotting lol

Probably worried about some sort of claim or guff like that...elfen safetee ho hum...

Hey Max, you think you've got a problem. The other day when I was changing my front tyre (again!) I stripped one of the pinch bolts on the front lower leg that clamps the spindle.

Did I fix it, of course I did, today, 10 minutes, M8 helicoil kit. Good as gold!
