Xt660z

Hello,

I have a couple of questions about my new to me XT660Z

1. I have read many reviews where it is mentioned that the XT660Z has a high riding height. However with 1.87mtr height I find the XT on the low side, both feet are flat on the ground. I also experience speed wobble / head shacke (I will get into this later) so I was thinking maybe the bike has been lowered. I measured the link on the rear shock and measured 15.5cm / 6.1inch is this stock or aftermarket.

2. While investigating my speed wobble issue I saw that the (rear wheel) sprocket holder can move approx 5mm in regard to the cush drive. Is this a normal thing on an XT?

3. I already found out that suspension is not to my liking, my dealer can install a hyperpro combi kit. This means progressive spring on the rear and new springs and different oil in the fork. Cost is 400 / 500 / $500 is this usefull? or do the forum experts recommend something different.

4. The bike is equipped with a DNA stage 2 filter. Will this pose a problem when driving offroad?

5. I have speed wobble issues from 80mph / 120km/h and up, Bike is equiped with Conti trail attack 2 about 50% thread left, 2.4Bar / 35psi rear shock is at max 9 (highest point on ring) front suspension is also at max 0 turns. My fork is level with the top clamp.

The suspension on the Z gets soggy after a while and they do sit low, making the handling funny. The tell-tale is the shock set at full preload, with nowhere left to go.

I don't think your bike has been lowered. The stock dog bones have 125mm hole centres, so 155mm total length sounds about right.

If you mean rotationally, then yes, that's pretty normal. The cush drive rubbers are soft and wear quickly. You can pack them out with cut up inner tube. It is a weakness of the bike. Just be sure there is no side to side play which would signify a worn out sprocket carrier bearing.

Any change to the stock suspension will be an improvement. Replacing the fork springs is a cost effective way to make things better, as is swapping the spring on the shock. Just bear in mind that the shock's damping (which wan't great from new) will be just as worn out as the spring, so you may be better off replacing the whole shock or getting it rebuilt with a fresh spring.

Stage 2 won't be an issue. Although, if you ride in very dusty conditions, you may be better off with an oiled foam filter, rather than cotton gauze?

Try lowering tyre pressures, particularly at the front. 35psi is a bit high. Give 29 front and 32 rear a go to start with (stock is 30/33). However, the saggy suspension you have mentioned won't be helping things much! Also the headraces are notorious for lacking in grease and getting notchy, so that's worth checking. The same also applies to a general leck of lubrication in the rear linkage and swingarm pivot.
